faithfulsubstitute.Mostofthesaints,nodoubt,couldrepeatandapplytothemselvesthewordsofSaintGregorytheGreat,stillwrittenonthewallsoftheMountCoeliusConvent:"ItisSylvia,mysaintlymother,whogavemetheChurch."Unfortunately,intheannalsofChristianmotherhoodtherearemanyblankpages;andtoooften,tohisdeepregret,thehistorianfindsnothingtosatisfyhiseagercuriosity,exceptthemerementionofanameaccompaniedwithsomecommonplaceeulogyofthevaguestcharacter.Andyet,fromtheheroicmotheroftheMaccabeestothepeasantmotheroftheCureofArs,whatagalleryofuniquepictures,whatagloriousprocessionofbravewomen,comefromeverywalkoflife!ThefirstthreecenturiesofChurchhistoryaretheheroicageofChristianmotherhood.Forpracticallythreehundredyears,withintervalsofunequalduration,theChristianhomeisunderthefireofpersecution;everymemberofthefamilyisacandidateformartyrdom,andthemotheriseducatingherchildrennotforlife,butfordeath.TheirlittleonesbreathedfreelytheheroicatmosphereinwhichChristianfortitudegrewandblossomednaturally.SuchfortitudehadnotfailedintheConfessorsandVirgins,anditdidnotfailintheChristianmotherswhomwefindnotmorefaithfulthanotherwitnessesofChrist,butundoubtedlymoresublime:forbesidesdeliveringthemselvestotheexecutioners,theywerecalledupontodelivertheirchildrenaswell.Asentence,borrowedfromthe
