Objective:
Students are able to recognize the elements of a poem; number of stanzas, rhyming words,rhyming pattern in the poem, use of capital letters and punctuation.
Materials:
Three poems for each student (
Now That I can Read, Song of Winter 
and
Kite Flying).
Threedifferent color crayons and a projector.
Lesson Sequence:
Lesson Intro
“Good morning boys and girls, today we will be identifying the different elements of three poems. Ineed everyone to take out their poetry binders and I’m going to pass out three different poems.When you get your poems place them in your poetry binder. Then write your name and the poemnumber on each poem. When you’re finished put one hand in the air so I know you’re ready tomove on.I will review what elements the students should be looking for; number of stanzas,rhyming words, rhyming pattern in the poem, use of capital letters and punctuation. Three studentswill then be asked to select one crayon color that will be used to highlight our findings in the poems.
Teach and Model
“I want everyone to look at the screen and take a look at the poem. I’m going to read the poem andI want you to follow along with me.”
Next I’ll have the students read the poem with me.
“I’m looking for three volunteers to pick a crayon color to use to highlight our findings in the poem.”
Make sure each student has three crayons
Have students point out the different elements of the poem
Stanzas
Rhyming words
Rhyming patter (ABA,ABBA)
Capital letters
Punctuation
As students make marks on their paper I will be doing the same on the projector as a model for thestudents.
Guided Practice
Read poem first and have students follow along on the overhead.
Read poem a second time but have students read with me.
Ask students “what do you notice about the poem?”
Highlight the different things the students pick out in the poem, be sure to explain why words rhymeso students have a clear understanding
