thelastknownpositionoftheplane.Atdawn,'piime'swere"'~erit"i:b:searci:lthe'areafromtheair.,UnitsoftheOrangeCountyandBrevardCountySheriff'sOfficeandBrevardCivilDefenseassistedinthesearcheffort.Mission4-136513November1978Floridaand,GeorgiaCAPsearchedforamissinglightaircraft,aPiperCherokee,missingonalocalflightfromCraigMunicipalAirport,Iecksonvtlle,withonepersononboard.Allleadswerefollowedupandatotalof3500squaremilesweresearched.ThemissionwassuspendedonNovember20.Theaircraftisstillmissing.TotalSARsupportsuppliedbyFloridaWingincluded37lightaircraft,and173personnel.Eighty-sevensortieswereflown.Atapproximately11:00a.m,,reportscametoMissionHeadquartersthatfishermenhadspottedplanewreckage31/2milesnorthofStateRoad50floatingintheSt.Johns'River,northwestofitslastreportedposition.TheSheriff'sOfficepersonnelsentairboatstotheareaandthemissionwassuspendedpendingpositiveiden-tificationoftheplane,

It
beganasacoastalpatrolsearchingforenemysub-marines.ForeighteenmonthsthisvitalpatrolcontinueduntiltheUnitedStatesregularairforceswereuptofullstrength.CAP'swartimerecordwasimpressive.InadditiontoCoastalPatrol,CAP'spilotsflewapproximately500,000hoursinsearchandrescuemissions,cargoflights,courierflights,borderpatrolduties,targettowing,etc.Sixty-fourCAPmemberslosttheirlivesprovidingtheseservices,includingtwofromFlorida.AsCAPbegantogrow,thecadetprogramwasadded.Inthefirstsixmonthsofthenewprogramover20,000cadets,boysandgirls,enteredtraining.Throughtheyears,CAPhasbeennurturedbyvariousagenciesandAirForceCommands.Duringthoseyearswehaveseentheadventofjets,rockets,andsatellites.WitheachchangeCAPhasgrownandmatured.Theem-phasisofourprogramshaschanged.SearchandRescuebeganusingbinocularsandhasprogressedtodirectionalfindersandsatellites.Cadetsnowhaveastructuredprogramwithdefiniteobjectives.Aerospaceeducationhasbroadenedtoincludetheentirecommunity,notjusttheCAPmembership.
What
remainsthesameafter37years?Thededicatedvolunteerwhostillgiveshisowntime,moneyandskillunselfishlytosaveandtrainothers.Thisdevotiontocauseandcountry,andtheabilitytochangeandgrowmakesCivilAirPatrolasviableanorganizationtodayasitwas37yearsago.HappyBirthday,CivilAirPatrol.AndHappyHolidaystoallyourmembers.
