Fortunately,thewholeeventwasonlyamockplanecrashwithprofessionallytrainedactorsplayingthepartsofthevic-tims,buttoanycuriousonlookers,theen-tireincidentseemedquitereal.Theentirescenariowasatrainingexer-cisedesignedtoratetheCAPcadetsontheskillsthattheyhadlearnedinthepastfewdays.BothcadetsandseniorsfromavarietyofGroupFivesquadrons(includingPompano,Ft.Pierce,andPalmBeachCa-detSquadrons)hadbeenparticipatingthatweekendinalargescalegroupbiv-ouachostedbytheLantana-LakeWorthCadetSquadron,08054.ThemainpurposeofsuchabivouacwastocoordinateandtrainmembersofsquadronsthroughoutthePalmBeachCountyandGroupFiveareainEmergencyServicesandrescueskills,manyofwhich'wouldberetainedandutilizedinavarietyofsituations,suchashurricanes,floods,orotherlocalcrisis.Thecadetstaffforthebivouac,formedwithmembersfromallsquadronspartici-pating,metearlyatthedesignatedJunoBeachsitetosetupcampandgettoknowoneanother.The'cadetsarrivedlaterintheafternoon,and,afterformingsquad-ronsandflights,werebriefedontheup-.comingclassesandactivities.Aftersettinguptheircampsites,thecadetsweregivenfreetimefortherestoftheevening.Saturdaybeganearly,withP.T.andbreakfast.Cadetsthenpreparedthem-selvesforthemanyclassesandactivitiesthatwereplanned.Asurvivalfoodclassfollowedbyanavigationsclassandexer-cisetookupmostofthemorning.Cadetcompetitionbetweenflightswasalsostartedonthenavigationscourse,withthetopflightoftheweekendtobenamedattheclosingofthebivouac.DennisConwayofthePalmBeachCountyHerpetologySocietyandhissnake

handlingteampaidavisittothebivouacsiteandbroughtwiththemseveralvarie-tiesofvenemoussnakesandtheirlook-alikesandgaveaclassonsnakeidentifi-cation.TheafternoonbroughtinstructioninAir-to-GroundcoordinationandGroundOperations,followedbyavisitfromthePalmBeachCountySheriff'sDepartmentandtheirrescuehelicopter.Theyfolloweduptheair-groundclasseswithdemonstra-tionandoperationoftheequipmenton-boardthehelicopter.TheafternoonwaswrappedupwithavisitfromPalmBeachCountyCivilDefenseandaclassonbasicRADEFproceduresandradiologicalmoni-toring.Manycadetssignedupforfurther'classesinRADEFwhich,whencompleted,wouldenablethemtoweartheradiologi-calmonitoringpatchontheiruniformsaswellastoperformusefulfunctionstoPalmBeachCountyintheeventofaradia-tionthreat.Thedaywasfinishedoffwithatriptothebeachforsomerestandrelaxationinpreparationforthemockdisasterthenext

Sunday,ofcourse,wastheimportantday.Alloftheequipmentwasreadied,andthecadetswerebriefed.Groundteamswereformedandweremarchedoffinsearchofthecrashsite.Thelocalnewsmediahadbeenpreviouslytranportedtothesite,andwereabletocovertheeventfrombeginningtoend.Thedrillwassorealistic,thatsmallplanescircledfromtimetotimetomakesureitwasn'tanac-tualcrash.Thesiteitselfwasveryauthen-tic,withthevictimslookingandactingquitereal.Oneoftheactorspretendedtobe"unhinged"byshockafterthecrashandlurchedaroundthesitewithhisfakebrokenleg.Hewasveryconvincing;ittooksixcadetstoholdhimdownfortreat-ment.Thecadetscontinuedwiththeirrescueworkanddidaverygood.job"ofpatchinguptheir"victims".Thescenariowasended,andacritiquewasprepared.CaptainJamesLusk,commanderofthebivouacwasverysatisfiedwiththeresultsandtheentirebivouacasawhole.
