ACertificateofAppreciationfromtheMetro-DadeParksandRecreationDepart-mentwaspresentedtoCaptainPamelaArcher,CommanderofEnterpriseCadetSquadron(08090)ofMiamifortheirout-standingservicetoDadeCounty.Thesquadronhasworkedforthepastfiveyearson"TheCornicopiaoftheArtsFestival"heldatVizcayaeachfall.Thecadetshelpartistssetuptheirwork,assistmusicianswiththeirinstruments,taketicketsfor80,000to100,000visitors,andmaintainaFirstAidStationamongtheirdutiesforthetwo-dayFestival.Thepresentationwasmadeatthe"Superstars"Sunday,29January84atKeyBiscayne,Florida.TheSquadronmemberswerehonoredguestswhichincludedmeet-ingthe"Superstars"andgivenspecialseatingtowitnessthecompetitiveevents.

flownbyTonyJannusflewfromst.PetersburgtoTampa.NewYear'sEveabanquetwasheldatAl-bertWhittedAirportwithsome400peopleattendingandDr.PaulE.Garber,HistorianEmeritusoftheAirandSpaceMuseum,SmithsonianInstitution,Washington,DCwastheHonorGuestandSpeaker.Dr.Gar-berisrecognizedinCivilAirPatrol'sSeniorTrainingProgramhavinglevelIVnamedforhim.lTCNathanielBrittinghamandlTCMarylouBrittinghamwereDr.Garber'sescortsthroughouttheweekendevents.FiftymembersfromfivelocalsquadronsunderLTCWilliamB.BoydasProjectOf-ficer,assistedinsafe-guardingtheantiqueaircraftandantiquecarswhichwereondis-play.CAPalsohelpedwithcrowdcontrol.On1JanuarytheaircraftwhichwasanexactreproductionoftheoriginalairboatbuiltbyanumberofaviationenthusiaststookofffromtheUnitedStatesCoastGuardStationcarryingacacheofmailfirstdaytypecoverswhichwillbecomecollec-tor'sitems.Ittookapproximatelyfourandone-halfyearsfortheairboattobecon-structedandcost$20,000.00.Plansaretobuildanaviationmuseumonthewater-frontinSt.PetersburgtohousetheBenoist.ColonelBrittinghamflewDr.GarbertoTampaforthearrivaloftheBenoist.TheMcDillCadetSQactedasescortstotheVIPguestswhoincludedrelativesofThomasBenoist,themanufactureroftheoriginalairboat,severalmembersoftheFanslerfamily.Mr.Fanslerwastheentrepe-neurwhobroughttheideatost.Peterburg,Dr.GarberandthepilotEdHoffmanwereinterviewedbyCBSandtheprogramwasairedonallnationalandlocalstations.AmemberofCivilAirPatrol,MaryFlet-cher,designedthestationeryandallthepostersandbanners,etc.MaryisamemberofBayAreaSeniorSquadron.AnotherVIPguestattheBenoistcelebra-tionwaslelandSealsofCapeCoral,Mr.Sealswasamechanicfortheairlinein1914.

WhenyouthinkoftheMarcomother-daughterteam,youthinkdedication.Lt.NancyFriesen,group20AdministrativeOfficer,andLt.NormaBehnke,PersonnelOfficerfortheMarcoIslandSeniorSquad-ron,aretheonlymother-daughterteamingroup20.TheybothflyasObserversontheMarco"SundownPatrol"flightsoutovertheEverglades,alongthecoastalwa-tersandthroughtheTenThousandIs-lands.NancyisTDYtotheMarcoSquad-ronforflying.Theyrecentlyjustcom-pletedthierbasicintheF.E.A.T.exerciseheldatthePortoftheIslands.Theybothtalkof"howmuch"CivilAirPatrolhasbroughtintotheirlives,andwe,ingroup20,canthinkofnothingexcept"howmuch"theybothhavecontributedtotheCivilAirPatrol.Thededicationtheybringtotheirjobisevidentlyahold-overfromtheirlivesbeforeCAP.Themother,Norma,isquiet,efficientandveryfriendly.DaughterNanissoftspoken,ano-nonsenseapproachtoprob-lemsandalso,likeMom,openandfriend-ly.Lt.BehnkeisoriginallyfromGrandRapids,Michigan.Shestudiedvoice,danceandpiano.Professionally,asacol-oraturasoprano,shehassunginchurches,operettasandwasthesoloistfortheSaintCeceliaMusicSociety.Sheworkedfo.rtheRedCross,wasadirectorforasummermusiccampofover100childrenfor9years.ShemovedtoMarcoinJuneof1972,joiningtheCivilAirPatrolinMarcointhefallof1981,achartermember.Lt.FriesenfollowedalonginMom'sfootstepsasfarastrainingintheArts.Itkindof"runsinthefamily"tobeartisticandtalented.Shehasalwayssunginherchurchchoirandlater,sangwiththeGrandRapidsSymphonyChoir.Aftergrad-uatingfromHighSchool,andatage1-8,NanjoinedtheAirForce.ShedidbasicatLackland,inTexas,andwastrainedasaStewardess,basedatMcGuireAFB,inNewJersey,aspartoftheMATS(MilitaryAirTransportService)ontheEuropeanrun.Itwashereshemetherhusband,apilotforNorth-WesternAirlines.TheyadoptedatinybabyKoreangirlandNanstayedhomewithbaby.Two(2)yearslater,in1963,Nan'shusbandwaskilledintheNorth-WesternflightthatcrashedintheEverglades.ThisgreatMother-DaughterteamoftheCAPmovedtoMarcoin1972,anditwasn'tuntilOctoberof1981,whenthenewCAPMarcoIslandCompositeSquad-ronwasformed,thatthesetwograndladiescame"aboard."Theteamcorre-lates,collaboratesandcorrespondswithWinginfastandfuriousstyle,determinedtokeeptheirSquadronandGroupontheirtoes,andimpressingallofusto"doitright,theCAPway."

IdecideditwastimetoputtousetheCAPcalendarandtouseourwingpublica-tion,GatorCAPers,toadvertisethepres-enceofFloridaWingHeadquarters,CAP,intheOrlando,Floridaarea.Ontheinsidecoverofthecalendar,IpastedacopyofthehistoryofCAPanditsmission.Ithenmailedboththecalendarandthepublication,alongwithacoverletter,toalltheTVandradiostationsandlocalpapers.InmyletterIintroducedmy-selfastheFloridaWingPAOandletthemknowthatIwasheretohelptheminmat-tersconcerningCAP...andiftheyneededhelpinanyotherarea,Iwouldbeattheir"beckandcall."Imadesuretoin-cludemyhomephonenumberaswellasmybusinessnumber.Themail-outproducedanimmediateresponse...lessthanaweeklater,Ire-ceivedacallfromoneofthelocalDrs,whoalsodoesahalf-hour,pre-taped,Sun-daymorningshow,called,
