STANDARD 9 ± Collaborative Relationships: The teacher understands the role of thecommunity in education and develops and maintains collaborative relationships withcolleagues, parents/guardians, and the community to support student learning and well-being.
1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard²put the standard into your own words.
T
eachers need to relate to students on a deeper level than just the classroom setting, so bycommunicating with parents and community members teachers can get a better understanding of their students and their lives. Establishing connections shows that the teachers are interested inseeing the students succeed in and out of the classroom and want to be someone the students or  parents can trust and rely on. Also establishing communication and connections helps to promotecommunity where the parents want to be involved and want to volunteer time and services to theclassroom.
T
his in turn will lead to further learning experiences as members of the community, parents, relatives, whoever would want to come in and share with the students.
2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard.
Sending out a parent letter is a great way to establish community and open communication lineswith parents. It gives parents a sense of the teachers¶ background, who they are as a person, andmakes them more personable.
T
his provides parents with ease about who their children are withduring the day. It also allows for the teacher to explain to the parents what is expected of their children and what types of activities they will be engaged in during the school year. It isinformative and casual so that when parents do call or come in to have a conference they feel likethey already know you which makes them more at ease to bring up questions or concerns.
