Im signing House Bill No. 1500, Ihave exercised the authority given w the Governor under the ‘Constitution of Virginia to veto specific provisions inthe enrolled appropriation bill. My veto affects ‘he second year appropriation for public television and public radio grants ia Rem 123. Such grants are ‘not core services of government, and especially given the scarcity of sources during these dificult ‘economictimes, such grants ought tobe eliminated, ‘Therefore, Ihave vetoed the second year appropriation in Item 123 providing grants to public television and public radio stations. My veto action will etn this item tothe form in which twas originally ‘enacted inthe 2010 leisativesesion consistent wih the Virginia Supreme Cour ruling in Gilmore vs Landsidle. The net effect of this ation will educe the overall appropriations for these activities by {$424,001 in fiscal year 2012. believe i tobe an appropriate reduction given the discretionary nature of (his funding and tho real ‘done by public television and radio will continue with generous contbutions from the private stor which face us on the budgetary Font.
