What happened when the Lake Washington Ship Canal was

completed in 1934 and the water level in the big lake dropped by nine feet?
Join us on May 14th when Megan Carlisle, archivist at the Eastside Heritage
Center, explains how the changing shoreline
affected businesses and residents from
May
Renton to Woodinville to Lake Sammamish.
General Meeting
SATURDAY, MAY 14
It also impacted the Sammamish River, seen 10:30 A.M. TO NOON
here circa 1914 with the “May Blossom” making OLD REDMOND
its way up the marine highway, says Megan, SCHOOLHOUSE
COMMUNITY
who researched the topic for a 7th grade
CENTER
geography unit for Bellevue School District.

Rose Weiss’ Girl Scouts Memorabilia

The late Rose Weiss was well known for work with the Girl Scouts in
Redmond and now we have some of her memorabilia (only part of which is
seen here) thanks to her daughter Pat Weiss Jovag.

“Avondale School,”
by Dorisjean Colvin,
was donated by Michele
Rooney. Her late parents,
Tom and Kay Thomas,
had acquired it years ago.
“They would be so thrilled
to know that it has found
a good home!” she told us.
Most of Dorisjean’s work
was in pastels but this
beauty is in oil.

NEWS N Lifetime Membership

In Memory of Wayne R. Hansen
Having earlier done so to honor his
mother, Lucille B. Hansen-Bellings, Society
member Tom Hansen last month acquired a
lifetime membership in the name of his father,
Wayne R. Hansen. Born in 1914 in Snohomish,
Wayne was raised in Nebraska until 1927 and
then went to Seattle, where he attended
Lincoln High School. He met Lucille there,
graduated in 1932 and they married in 1936.
“My folks moved to 3458 East Lake
Sammamish Road, the old Weber House on
Weber’s Point, in November 1944,”
Tom wrote.
“Dad worked in Seattle, commuting about 50 miles a day. Second
big challenge was remodeling the farm house. ‘Not a square joint in the
place,’ he’d say. Third challenge was raising a family—me and my little sister
Christine with Mom—in the woods. Fourth, Wayne and Lucille participated in
the Happy Valley Grange for awhile where Dad was master of the grange.
“The Bicycle Derby and the PTA Circus were big affairs. We were a
camping family and Dad went hunting with neighbor Leonard Dudley. My
folks had their own life but knew several people along the East Lake, also
some others in the Redmond area.
“My father died of a heart attack at 48 in the old house he worked so
hard on with Mom. Both are buried at Cedar Lawns, about two miles from
the old Weber House.”
