From the Master

Dynnargh!

To paraphrase the famous G K Chesterton quote …."it's Wednesday, I'm in Berlin, where should I be?....."

This , my last newsletter to you as Master, has me departing Berlin, Tegel Airport (overflying Werner March's monu-
mental 1936 Olympic Stadium) returning from Rescue 2008 the World Life Saving Championships.

It has been an intense week of observing and learning how to manage the unusual and the unexpected that attaches
to a significant international event with all its attendant rich diversity of humanity - from the choreography of the
Opening Ceremony to observing a developing nation's delegate consume a Baby Bell cheese red wax and all. Much
food for thought for our Rescue 2010 in Cornwall!

Each spare Berlin moment has been filled with architectural visits, enhanced by Mervyn Miller's tour de force guide
notes. I was particularly pleased to visit the Kaiser Wilhem Memorial Church and see the "Stalingrad Madonna" which
had formed the theme of the sermon at the Royal Academy Annual Service on Varnishing Day a few weeks ago. Alas
not even the status of Master Architect could achieve penetration of the pavement security at Wilford's British
Embassy close by the Brandenburg Gate.

The Summer Court Dinner of the Fruiterers' Company, a wonderful occasion held in the spectacular Durbar Court of
the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, was just one highlight of our past frantic quarter that has also seen the Mistress
Architect and I dine at Mansion House with the Furniture Makers and Tin Plate Workers, at Fishmongers' Hall with
the Constructors' and the World Traders, at Drapers' Hall with the Launderers and for our own Milo Lecture and , of
course, Carpenters' Hall for our Election Court Dinner when we welcomed new faces to the Company as covered
later in the Newsletter

Our busy schedule has also taken in the annual Ironbridge weekend and the Master’s visit to the Isles of Scilly, a
Centenary Evensong and Reception at Goldsmiths' Hall with the Sons of the Clergy, attending the Bart's Hospital
Annual View Day and enjoying delightful hospitality with the Firefighters at Winchester House, the Environmental
Cleaners at Guildhall, the Paviors at Cutlers' Hall, and the Barber Surgeons 700th Anniversary also at Guildhall.

Victoria has received her own invitations to luncheon, at Saddlers' Hall with the Mistress Saddler and at the Old Bailey
with Barbara Bear, wife of the Sheriff. The sun shone for us at our Buckingham Palace Garden Party and we now are
scurrying towards the Isles of Scilly for restorative, gentle perambulation and reflection on a most memorable year.

We owe a multitude of thanks to so many, not least the learned and Gallant Clerk who will no doubt join our sigh of
relief particularly as he can now revert to just being Learned! Above all it has been the utmost goodwill, kind regard
and warm support of you all that has made this such a special year for us and we have done our utmost to celebrate
cultural diversity and delight, to extend the Company's profile, status and interconnectedness with other Liveries and
to have fun. We hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.
