Washing MachinesAgitate Owners
Q:
Our washing machine ispretty old, and one day whenmy son was doing laundry the dialmade a cracking sound and cameoff in his hand. Right now we makedo by arduously turning the smallplastic collar that’s left until thewash cycle comes on. However, only one cycle, “permanent press,”works properly (goes all the wayfrom start to finish). Is there anyway to fix this, or should I startsaving for a new washer?
 — Han-nah G., Brattleboro, Vt.
A:
Unfortunately, I’m not sureexactly what the solutionwould be. If I had the make and modelof the washing machine, I could look up common problems and suggestedfixes for that brand. I do know thatsome replacement parts, like the dial, can be ordered, but if the machineis more than several years old, the part may no longer be available. Thesingle-cycle only problem might bea problem with the wash timer, butagain, it’s tough to know how to fix it.Your best option at the moment isto contact an appliance repair cen-ter with the make and model and adescription of the problem. A repair-man might come out to fully diagnosethe issue. If so, ask for any repair esti-mate in writing before allowing anywork to be done.***
Q:
I picked up an older washer-dryer set for a good price viaan online ad. Everything worksfine, except that when the clothesare done washing, they seem tohave a lot of lint and stuff on them. Most of it comes off in the dryer, but it’s annoying. How can I fix it?
 — A Reader, via email
A:
Sounds like the washer couldhave had some kind of lint-trap attachment. Many, many yearsago, some upright washers had per-forated plastic attachments placedon or near the top of the basin tocatch stray lint during the wash andrinse cycles. Contact the person you bought it from and ask if he or shehas something like that. You may beable to order the part online as well.Incidentally, many modern washersstill have lint traps. They’re locatedin out-of-the-way places and aredesigned to not need cleaning veryoften. Check the manufacturer’sguide to see if your new washer hasa lint trap and for any instructionsregarding its maintenance.

Keep your washingmachine clean by wipingdown the tub periodicallywith a dampcloth. Twice ayear, run the washer through a fullcycle with only a cup of vinegar or  bleach added.

RICHMOND – I you ridea motorcycle or bicycle, youprobably know the rustra-tion o getting stuck at a redlight that just won’t change– because the sensors underthe street can’t detect yourtwo-wheeler.wo-wheel vehicles willbe allowed to run those redlights, under certain situa-tions, under a bill signed intolaw hursday by Gov. BobMcDonnell.House Bill 1981 will let mo-torcyclists, moped riders andbicyclists pass through redlights, as long as there is nooncoming traic, ater wait-ing 10 seconds or two cycleso the light. he law will takeeect July 1.Champe Burnley, presidento the Virginia Bicycling Fed-eration, said riders o two-wheel vehicles oten end uptrapped at red lights, with nosae, legal option about whatto do, because motorcyclesand bikes aren’t heavy enoughor don’t have enough metal totrip the sensor.“Most o the traic signalstoday have a wire in the road– so it’s an induction loop. And requently there’s justnot enough metallic mass orthe induction loop to pick upa cycle that goes over there,”Burnley said.“I you’re on a bike and you get to a stoplight – and Istop or stoplights religiously – it puts me into a diicultposition. Because i the lightdoesn’t change, I’ve either gotto wait or a car to come up be-hind me to trip the stoplight,or I’ve got to break the law – and I don’t like to do that.”Delegate homas “ag”Greason, who sponsored HB1981, said the legislation willmake things much saer orriders.“he bill is designed toincrease the saety or thoseriders who ride motorcycles, mopeds or bicycles,” Greasonsaid. “When they approachand are stranded at an inter-section, and the weight o their vehicle is not great enough totrigger the light, and so they’restranded at a red light, andthey really don’t have any le-gal options available to themunder today’s code.”Greason, a Republican romPotomac Falls, said somepeople raised questions aboutwho would be at ault i a mo-torcycle runs a red light andcauses an accident. But thosequestions have been addressedin the bill, he said.“Imagine that the red light isa stop sign: I the motorcyclistpulls out into oncoming tra-ic and causes an accident, hewould have the same liability i he was at a red light or i hewas at a stop sign,” Greasonsaid.Under his measure, motor-cycles and bicycles must cometo a complete stop at a redlight and wait or 10 secondsor two cycles o the light.“hen they proceed withcaution, as i they were at astop sign, and they must main-tain all the liability, and giveway to oncoming traic, romeither direction,” Greasonsaid. “So there is no transero liability.”Delegate Bill Janis, R-GlenAllen, introduced a similarmeasure – HB 1991. His pro-posal was olded into Grea-son’s bill.HB 1981 passed the Houseon a 75-4 vote in January.he Senate then unanimously approved the bill – with anamendment emphasizing thatbicyclists and motorcyclistswho proceed through a redlight must yield to oncomingtraic. he House then voted87-11 in avor o the amendedbill.

Conusion aterhospital stay
Anyone who’s been in the hos-pital can remember the eelingo unreality that comes rom thenoises and sleep interruptions inthat environment, not to men-tion eeling unwell. And goinghome doesn’t automatically makeeverything ine again: Many se-niors experience loss o memory, conusion and cognitive problemswhen they’re discharged rom thehospital.Te National Institute o Agingcommissioned a study on this phe-nomenon, and it was completedby the Northwestern University Feinberg School o Medicine.wo hundred seniors age 70-plus who had no previous cognitiveor dementia issues were given aMini-Mental Status Examinationupon release rom the hospital.Tis 30-question test only takesa ew minutes to administer, andchecks or things such as orienta-tion to time and place, calculation, attention and recall. Te patient isasked to repeat three words, telltime, know the day o the week, spell a word backward and copy agure with pencil and paper.Nearly one-third o those se-nior patients being released romthe hospital had low cognitionscores. his means that seniorscoming out o the hospital mightnot understand the instructionsthey’re given or medications andsel-care.ested again one month later, their scores had risen considerably or things like reading, writing, calculations and comprehension. One conclusion o the study wasthat “patient sel-management”training -- teaching the patientabout his or her medications andcare -- should be handled laterrather than at the time the patientis being sent home. Another con-clusion was that doctors and amily (and I’d add “riends”) need to stepup, be aware o the phenomenonand give assistance -- or at leastarrange or it.Matilda Charles regrets that shecannot personally answer readerquestions, but will incorporatethem into her column wheneverpossible.
