BIN LADEN is DEAD:Five Philosophical, Political, Moral,
Diplomatic, and Prediction-AssociatedTopics to Consider
By Daniel J. Cohen
#1 Happy: To be, or Not to be?
If we are to make moral judgments, Osama Bin Laden was one of the worstpeople in the world. His decision to orchestrate the death of 2,752 people in amost heinous manner, destroying nationally symbolic landmarks in the process...well, try not to judge me for saying "Good riddance."Oh sure, there are some pacifist statements floating about, especially in socialmedia, that forward the argument that we should not rejoice, but I find thempuzzling. Mainly, some very reasonable, moderate citizens seem to call forsympathy for Bin Laden while finding little room in their hearts for, say, child
molester/murderers. How many Americans would feel horrified at the death of achild murderer? In what way is Bin Laden any better? We may not officially be able to tag him as achild murderer, but he stands as the worst case against monotheism, a dreadful, malicious mass murderer whose political ideology and entire world view washellbent on vengeance for entire segments on Earth that had nothing to do withhim.I can say with a straight face that Bin Laden was your enemy. If you don't know that, then you either don't believe in enemies or don't know one when you seeone. He called for the death of you and everyone around you. If some idiot asks ina sarcastic tone if you have ever been threatened by a Muslim terrorist, you cananswer in all honesty "every day.
For guidance, we might look at both the religious and non-religious take on thesituation. For the atheistic take, Christopher Hitchens, in his argument with PaulEdwards, who stated, "
"Go love your own enemies. Don't be loving mine. Myenemies are theocratic fascists. I don't love them, I want to destroy them. YOU goand love them!"
As for the more standard religious practice, I know the Jews cheer like crazy whenever the name "Haman" is said on Purim. Haman was the first man whowanted to wipe out all of the Jews. They hung him on the gallows he hadprepared for them.Being a little happy this guy is gone has some merit.
