Saturday 17th June 1797 — We took 2 Boats with
7 Barrels of Flour & 2 large barrels of Pork & part of
barrel of beans— M Beard took the Charge of one boat:
é& myself the other we proceeded up the River near one
mile above the a large stream that comes to the River
from the South, and about to the head of boat Naviga-
tion, we camped for the night — it began to rain at
midnight & rained very hard the rest of the night & some
part of the next day.
Sunday 18th June 1797— after landing our stores
&e we took one boat & all hand went down to our next
encampment we were just 3 hours on our way & arrived
between 11 & 12 OC— on my arrival I found M Mor-
ley— & Minor Bicknall at camp—Bicknall had been to
Cleaveland & returned with the horse which had got
there before him. he lay out without fire Blanket or
much provision, one night going & one night Returning
—he brought Letters from MrHart & Mr Stoddard
which Informed me that Mr Tinker had started for
Conneought the 13 Instant that MrRichard Stoddard
had Arrived with his brother & beth were well & wished
employment —
Mr Redfield brought in his line north of our camp
Monday ) we spend in washing & preparing to go

June) I sent one boat down the river by Thos
Tupper Mess—Brown & Richey— I wrote to Stod-
dard to survey more 100 acre Lots in Cleaveland I to
start for the upper camp the 7th day of July with 4 men
to run a long line to the Lake —

could be spared

Tuesday 20th June 1797 — Redfield party started
in the morning — to run the Line between No 8 & No 4
from the NW Comer of No 8 in the 10th Range
Beard is unwell he set out after Redfield had
started— with the rest of our stores in one boat to go to
head Quarters at the head of Navigation— The other
men which were with us went with him— T stayed be
hind to fix a Compass & to keep the Camp untill At
water & his party should Return —
One of our horses appeared to be stifted which was
not perceived untill this morning—

Tuesday 20th Fume — T examined my Compass &
found that that open sight would ron about 1/6 of a
degree to the right of thread sight —
After fixing the green spirit level Compass T found
that it ran 10’ to the left of mine with a thread sight—
at'8°?"' in the evening I ranged The North Star

tumed to my camp — Dayid Beard & Amzi Atwater
stay by the stores at Head Quarters —it was passed
noon when they arrived we got dinner & set out to con-
tinue the Line between the 10th & 11th Ranges . we
measured from the 4 mile post on the bank of the River
between No 8 & No 4— run North 8.50 up about against
the middle of a sharp bend of the river— then turned
§ 78°W (which is the general course of the river as run-
ning with the stream in s* bend) and run to the river
1.00 — we then went a few rods west & measured across
@ peninsula which is 2.00
We then travelled cast on
Redfield line after we leave the
Tntervale for 2 miles the land is eut into
