Audience Feedback

I Created a questionnaire so that I could decide whether or not my project had been successful
in the eyes of my initial target audience, here is the questionnaire that I have created;

1) What does the title suggest to you?

2) What genre/type of music does the magazine focus on and how do you know this?
Pop/Indie/Dance.
3) What makes the pages look professional and what stops them from looking professional?
4) How genuine would you say the front cover is on a scale of 1-10?
5) Does the contents page simply inform or does it also manage to interest you in reading the
rest of the magazine?
6) Does the article sound like a piece of journalism? If not what bits don’t sound right?
7) Does the article layout make you want to read it? If not why not?

I gave the questionnaire to 8different people of my initial target audience to see what they
thought.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK!

What does the title suggest to you?

ANSWERS
1. Not sure.
2. That it is a fashion or music magazine.
3. Don’t really know, it sort of relates to music.
4. That it is a music magazine.
5. Music Magazine.
6. Don’t know.
7. That is a magazine related to music maybe.
8. Feels current and up to date.

From my results it shoes for the title that it doesn’t exactly relate to the type of genre I have chosen, however
some people noticed that it would relate to music, if I was to do this again then I would make sure that I chose a
name that would be easier related to music and fashion.
2) What genre/type of music does the magazine focus on and how do you
know this? Pop/Indie/Dance.

Here are the results in a pie chart of the type of genre that
people believed my magazine focused on just by looking at it.

DANCE

INDIE
POP

The results that I have received are positive, over 60% of the people that I questioned thought that my
magazine genre was pop, which it is. This is good because it shows that the way I have created it
immediately shows the genre of the magazine by its representation. This is essential of a real life magazine
so therefore it has worked well.
3) What makes the pages look
professional and what stops them from
looking professional?

ANSWERS
1. The photos and the layout make it look really professional.
2. The layout of it.
3. All of it makes it look professional I think.
4. I think a change of colours would make it look a bit more professional but I like everything
else.
5. The photos make it look professional but I think a couple of the fonts show that it isnt.
6. The way its set out makes it look professional.
7. Mainly the photos.
8. I like it all.

The answers from my audience feedback show that people did like my product but didn’t think
maybe that some of the photographs or fonts worked that well, although I am pleased with the
feedback that my photos look professional because they are one of the key things that I tried the
most to focus on to make them look good and make them professional. If I was to change it
maybe then I would probably change some of the colours and the fonts but this would require
more time than I had.
4) How genuine would you say the front
cover is on a scale of 1-10?

ANSWERS

1. 8
2. 7
3. 9
4. 8
5. 9
6. 8
7. 7
8. 8

My results are positive as everybody said over 7 which is high, this shows that people thought that my front cover was
genuine and looked professional which was the aim I was trying to achieve, therefore I am pleased with the outcome of the
results.
5) Does the contents page simply inform or
does it also manage to interest you in reading
the rest of the magazine?

Sales

Infrom and Interest

Inform

My results show that my contents page was appealing to my audience as 90% of people said that
my magazine contents page was informative and also interesting. Therefore it shows that I have
created a magazine that would work if it was being retailed as people would want to read it as
they would find interest in it.
6) Does the article sound like a piece of
journalism? Yes? If not Why!

Does it sound like journalism

Yes
No

I am very pleased with the feedback I have received from this question because all 8 of the people
that read my questionnaire had said that they thought that my article sounded realistic. This is great
as it proves that I would have the potential for it to be a real life magazine and that I would have the
power to retail it.
7) Does the article layout make you want
to read it? If not why not?

Sales

Yes
No

From this question my results again have come out really positive, with magazines it is key to
ensure that your interview/article doesn’t look boring and catches the readers eye. Here are
some of the comments that came with the answers; ‘ It isn’t boring as it has quotes and pictures
as well as big bits of text’ ‘Its broken up and just not a big lump of text’ ‘The colours and photos
and text grabs make it interesting to look at making you want to read’.
Audience Feedback Overall

Overall I am really pleased with my audience feedback,
I believe that I have had some really positive outcomes
especially from specific questions. All the things I were
aiming to achieve have come through and shown that I
have do it, I have been given a few negative comments
but that it normal and is also good in a way as it would
show me that do differently next time if I was to do it
again and they would be helper points for me in the
future.
Introduction

For my media coursework I have created a music and fashion magazine, i decided to
incorporate fashion as I thought it would make it a bit different and give it something
more. I focused on various real well known artists as some kind of ‘stimulus’, these
were Elisa Doolittle, Katy Perry, Paloma Faith. I created a front cover for the magazine,
a contents page and a double page spread. I worked alone throughout this project and
believe what I have created has been successful in relation to how I planned it to be.
In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?

My genre of magazine is music fashion, it focuses mainly on
music but with different elements of fashion. It is created
for females but could also be for males who had interest in
music fashion. It was vital that I created it to be as realistic
as possible for this reason I did much research into different
existing magazines to help me create my own.
Incorporating fashion into my genre was successful and
worked well, it gave the magazine a larger potential
audience which in theory would be better for money
making. I believe my ideas worked effectively, this is
represented through my audience feedback.

My front page immediately addresses the fact that the
magazine also focuses on fashion, this is made
noticeable through the style of clothing used in the
model. As well as this some of the captions on the front
cover focus on fashion and draw the reader in and
make them want to look inside and read more, it is
vital that the magazine front cover is interesting to
catch the buyers eye as soon as they see it. I also tried
to make my double page spread interesting by using
one of the most interesting quotes from the interview
again to catch the readers and make them think
‘ I want to go on and read more, the quote I used was,
‘music is my life, it always has been’ this would make
the reader want to find out more about the artists
history and also find out more about them. The colours
and pictures used also need to be interesting and eye
catching therefor I have used large fun pictures and
bright eye catching colours such as pinks, greens, blues.

boring for the reader.
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?

For my music magazine I have represent music stars and celebrities and teens. I have tried to create an artist
similar image wise to Elisa Doolittle and Katy Perry as they are both successful artists. To do this I had to think
a lot about the image. I researched into both of my chosen artists styles and looked at different images of them
to try and make my artist slightly similar. It was essential to ensure that my artist looked the best on the front
cover image to make the eye catching and make people want to buy it. I also had to buy various magazines and
read different celebrity interviews to make my narrative interesting, it was key to make sure that my text was
interesting so the reader would possibly buy the magazine to read it. Much research was needed to ensure that
it represented that group of people well, here are some of the images I chose that I wanted mine to be similar to.
I have focused on young contemporary teens to help me focus on my style by thinking of somebody they would
particularly want to look unto as a ‘role model’ and somebody who they could follow trends off.

What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why.

When creating my music magazine I got some inspiration of the summer magazine issue from
VIBE. This is where I chose my music magazine from because it was already professional and
looked really good. Vibe is an American magazine that focus’ on Music Pop/Hip Hop and also
elements of fashion and the latest celebrity gossip. This it’s the type of genre that I was focusing
on for my article also so I believe the distributers of this magazine may be likely to distribute
my media product.

InterMedia is the name of the publishers, they are based in America although I believe that my
product may be able to reach a high potential with a lot of work and they also consider some
UK magzines. Although they mainly focus on Hip Hop music my artist and magazine have
many different elements of music and therefore gives a wide range of audience possibilities.
Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my target audience I have chosen females aged 16-25,
the reason for this is because I think has potential it is a
large range. I have created my target audience by using
GRASS, this helps me to define my audience properly.
Gender- female Race- white Age- 16-25 Social economic
status – Working class. The reason I have chosen this
particular target audience is that I think that this age range
of people would be most interested in music fashion and
females especially, also I think that younger people are
more likely to purchase them as they find most interest in
these types of things.
How did you attract and address your
audience.

When creating something that will be available for purchase it is
essential that all elements are covered to make the product its best.

To try and make my magazine the best it could be and as

realistic as possible it was essential for me that I was
addressing all the main elements of a real life magazine,
therefore I had to ensure that I was using bright colors, a
variation of colors is needed to set the mood and also
highlight the type of artist that the magazine focuses on.
I also had to ensure that I was using bold writing, italics
and different fonts, it Was essential to do this so that the
front cover drew attention to potential buyers and made
it eye catching and stand out so that people would
want to buy it. The fashion element was also very
important as I had to ensure that I was making my artist
look at her best for my cover so that people would look
at it and immediately want to read about her.
What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of
constructing your product?

Whilst creating my project I have had to use many different
technologies. One of the main things I have had to use is a
APPLE MAC computer, this was new to me as I had not
done this before and I found it quite a challenge, I had to
use two different programmes – Photoshop and InDesign, I
found these quite difficult to use therefore it required a lot
of work.
I used Photoshop to edit all my photos for my magazine,
then I used InDesign to create it. I also used blogger to
update how my project was going, this helped me to keep
track of what I was doing and what I still had left to do.
I also had to train to use the lighting equipment for when I
was taking my photos of my artist, I also had to be trained
how the use the camera properly to.
I had to use safari internet on the apple macs i also learnt to
use www.blogger.com this was the place where I created a
blog updating my work how it was going and all of my
research. Aswell as this I had to use www.dafont.co.uk to
find the different fonts for my magazine.
In addition to this I learnt to use the full lighting sets and
equipment in depth as I did long photo-shoots consisting of
over 100 photos each time that I did them.
What I have learnt..

I have learnt many different things and many different
techniques from constructing my project.
I have learned how to successfully edit photos to a
professional quality, I have also learnt to create
magazine front covers to a professional quality. I have
learnt how to use the studio to take pictures and how to
use the lighting system. Over all I have learnt quite a lot
from doing my project.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When looking back onto my preliminary tasks it is very apparent that I have made
many changes and progressed in many different ways. My preliminary task was
very plain and not eye catching or realistic whatsoever, I didn’t have much
experience at the beginning therefore my prelim was not very good and it showed
my lack of experience with the equipment.
Finished Project
Pre-Lim
Pre-liminary task and Finished Product

In comparison my pre-liminary task are very different. For my pre-lim I didn’t have much time,
therefore it is nowhere near as detailed nor has it got as much effort put into it. My Pre-lim is very
plain and there is nothing that really catches your eye and makes you want to read it, where as my
finished product uses bright colours, interesting fonts and different styles of fonts.

The photo on my pre-lim was just taken quickly and has not been edited what so ever, where as the
one on my finished project was chosen out of one of 100 that I had taken, in addition it has been
cropped and put onto a background that I created myself.

As well as this I didn’t do any research for my pre-lim task I just created it at the spare of the
moment, for my final project I did research into other magazines taking ideas and using them to
inspire me for my own magazine.

I also think that my finished project looks a lot more realistic that my pre-lim, I definitely think that
people would be more likely to buy my finished project than my pre-lim.

On a whole I think that my finished project is a lot better as I had a lot more time to do it and aswell
as this it is more appealing for an audience.
OVERALL

Overall I believe that I have done well with my
project and that it works well, my audience
feedback also reflects this. I think that my key
strengths were research and the design of the
product, I think that the use of my research
helped me to create a good design. I think that
my weaknesses were using Photoshop, I
slightly struggled using it throughout the
project even up to the end, I also think that
another of my weaknesses was meeting
deadlines. Despite some of my weaknesses I
think that my finished project has worked well
and been successful on a whole.
