Dajjal book_Chapter-1 PrefaceP R E F A C E
Over the last thousand and four hundredyears, the coming of the one-eyed giant, theDajjal, has remained the topic of numerousdiscussions and debates in Muslimhouseholds all over the world. However, theactual understanding of this enigmatic phenomenon remains as elusive to us as itwas to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah so many centuries ago. It all beganwhen Mohammad (s.a.s), the final and thegreatest Messenger of Allah, told about thearrival of a giant on earth during the later time (Akheri Zamana), an event he hasreferred to as the greatest ever in the life of mankind. To give his people, his 'Ummah', both of his time and of the future, a better idea and understanding of this fearsomeentity, he has described in great detail whatit, the Dajjal would look like, its activities inthis world, what tremendous power it wouldyield over the world and the destiny of Manand he talked of its demand to be acceptedas the lord or 'rub' of mankind. He has calledthis character the 'Dajjal ', an Arabic wordused to describe something or someonedeceptive, something very attractive to look at, but is actually despicable a dazzlingimpostor. The Messenger of Allah has alsosaid that this giant would have sight in oneeye only, the other would be blind. Commonsense tells us, it can be no living being, for its vehicle is to having passed its the eastand the other in the west, see and hear whatis said in a whisper on the other side of theworld, and so forth. Among the thousands of 'Hadith' or Hadith s attributed to theMessenger of Allah, those concerning theDajjal occupy a position of great import andsignificance, deemed as it has been as thegravest danger to ever face mankind. TheHadith regarding the Dajjal are as thought provoking as they are frightening since theyspeak of a giant that will see with only oneeye yet have the power to bring the wholeworld under its control and in so doing leada great number of people astray. In one suchHadith, the Messenger of Allah has stated'From the Creation of Adam to the JudgmentDay, there is no other event as grave andalarming the as the Dajjal.1 He goes on tostate that- 'There has been no Messenger from the time of Noah (a.s.) who has notwarned his followers about the Dajjal.' 2And to further stress on its importance, andas an after thought the Messenger of Allahhimself sought refuge with Allah from themalaise of the Dajjal.3So how concerned are we about the colossalimport of a situation the Messenger hasdeemed as the gravest occurrence from the beginning to the end of time, aboutsomething all Messengers from the time of  Noah (a.s.) have warned their followersabout, regarding a matter our Messenger himself sought refuge from?It goes without saying that far from beingconcerned about it, we are yet to realize thatthe Dajjal's birth took place 472 years ago,and having passed its infancy and childhoodit is now an adult that has the entire worldincluding its 'Muslim' population laying prostrate at its feet! The reason for this ignorance remains thefact that during the last few centuries wewere colonized by the European Christianforces, the method of education theyimposed on us has been one that has takenus far away from the true faith of Islam. Theresult of which has been that this nation canaccurately recall how long it took Hannibalto cross the Alps with his army or recitewithout mistake from Shakespeare, but istotally in the dark as regards to what theMessenger of Allah has stressed to be themost important event in the history of thisworld. The small portion of this populacewhich is actively involved in the study of theQur'an and the Hadith too have neglected itto oblivion. With their shortsighted and

narrow vision, these people are waiting for the literal transformation of the Messenger's prophecy where he informs of theemergence of a huge one-eyed giant astridea colossal mount and of its tyrannical rule. They have accepted these Hadith in their literal aspect only, neither spending their time nor their effort in trying to see beyondthe mere words, to try and gauge why thisshould be the single most grave, influentialand frightening event throughout the world'shistory. These people devote far more timeon details regarding wadu (ablution),meswak (cleaning teeth), kuluk (usingsponge) and other trivial issues than theythink about the Dajjal or its significance!Like others, I too was waiting for a hugeone-eyed giant and to hear its proclamationto be the lord and ruler of mankind! However, the first time I realized that itwould not be the case was when I readMuhammad Assad's book "Road to Mecca".Muhammad Assad was born as LeopoldWeiss into an Austrian Jewish family andconverted to Din-ul-Islam in his youth. It isin this beautiful writing that he first hinted atthe idea of the Western civilization being theDajjal prophesied fourteen centuries ago bythe last Messenger of Allah. However he hasnot elaborated on this issue. It was in the late50's or early 60's that I read this book andfrom then onwards, the more I thought aboutit, the clearer it has become to me that hisidea is indeed correct. For the Messenger of Allah to give the mostly illiterate Arabs of fourteen hundred years ago a correct andcomprehensive picture of a civilization based on today's technological advancementwas next to impossible. Therefore, he did sothrough a series of allegorical referenceswhich exactly match the description of thewestern civilization of our time.Everything we know about the Dajjal isderived from the Messenger's 'Hadith' or tradition i.e. words or actions of theMessenger himself, also action of others, heapproved or disapproved of. As we allknow, Hadith are classified into severalgroups, among which three are prominent, namely the 'sahih' or correct; 'hassan' whichare also true but not as accurately related asthe former and thirdly 'daif' or weak, poor Hadith s, some of which are neverthelessaccepted when corroborated. Besides these, there are also 'gharib', 'munkar', 'maruf' etc.divisions. During the rigorous process of collecting and verifying true Hadith, manyfalse statements earlier deemed as correctHadith have been rejected, while some of the true ones have also been omitted due tothe fact that they could not be unbrokenlytraced back to the Messenger of Allahhimself. In order to get a complete andcomprehensive idea about any subject broached in the Hadith, it is necessary tostudy all Hadith regarding it,notwithstanding the fact whether they areaccepted without any doubt or rejectedoutright. Similar has been my method incollecting all relevant data about the Dajjal;however the ones quoted here are almost allSahih or correct Hadith and those remainedthe basic platform of this research.I have categorized all Hadith regarding theDajjal into two groups. One part containing predictions related to its importance andgravity, the other concerning itsidentification. From the first group of theHadith we are able to derive why theemergence of Dajjal occupies a moreimportant stance than the deluge of Nooh's(a.s.) (Noah) time and why it is graver thanthe world wars. In the second group of Hadith the Messenger of Allah has related tous some definite signs through which weshould be able to correctly identify theDajjal as what it is and thus resist and rejectthe influence of the Dajjal. The almostcomplete lack of education and the totalabsence of technology could have preventedthe people of the then Arabia inunderstanding the concept of the Dajjal,

however, today, when almost every one of the allegories used to describe the Dajjal bythe Messenger have been reflected in themirror of the western society, how close arewe in correctly interpreting and identifyingit as the self-same "Masih-al-kazzab," theDajjal? Unfortunately far from resisting or rejecting it, we, the so- called Muslims of this world, have it in front of our very eyesand yet are not only unable to Dajjal? TheJudeo-Christian ‘Civilization’! recognize itfor its true self, but have accepted it as our lord, master and have submitted to it.Let us start with the name, with which theMessenger has introduced us to it, theDajjal- which is not actually a name, in thesense that it is more of a description than a proper name; like that of Imam Mahdi (a.s)who will have a separate personal name butis known to us as Al-Mahdi or 'the rightlyguided one' who will appear in the later times to guide mankind to true Guidance, the right path. Similarly, the Dajjal is not aname in the proper sense as an adjective. The literal meaning of the word "Dajjal" isthat of an attractive impostor, beautifuloutside but dark and ugly inside, a cheat adeceiver and a liar. Is not this statement trueof the technologically advanced westerncivilization which dazzles the beholder withfantastic achievements on the one hand yetdue to its absolute detachment from God intheir collective lives, society is rife withinjustices, crimes and sins of every kind? This 'civilization' has been responsible for the deaths of 14 million human lives incourse of the two world wars and another 20million people in different wars andskirmishes ever since. The number of peopledisabled from these would be at least doubleof the dead; countless more have beendisplaced and rendered homeless. It does notend there- injustices and cruelty on a personal and collective level, murders, thefts, rapes, kidnappings go on unabatedand it is for these that the westerncivilization is the dazzling, attractiveimpostor.1 Hadith, Muslim from Emran bin Hossain(ra).2 Hadith, from Abu Obaydah (ra) bin Zarrahand Abdullah bin Umar (ra)- Abu Daud,Tirmizi and Muslim.3 Hadith, from Aisha (ra)- Bokhari.Dajjal book_Chapter-2 Importance of theDajjal'sIMPORTANCE OF THE DAJJAL'SEMERGENCE
One
The Messenger of Allah has said, 'There will be no greater event from the creation of Adam to the Last day, than the appearanceof the Dajjal'. -Emran bin Hussain (r.a),Muslim.This is perhaps one of the most importantHadith regarding the Dajjal since itencompasses the entire history of mankind, from the creation to its end; which includesthe Great Deluge, the World Wars and everything in between. Yet, the Messenger hasstressed the event of the Dajjal as beinggreater in significance than any other. Therefore, it leaves little doubt as regards toits gravity. The Messenger of Allah had been made aware of all things great andsmall in the world's history: there was not asingle important issue in the history of thisworld that he had no knowledge of; he hasnevertheless stressed on the gravity of theDajjal as being the gravest of all. Therefore, the very fact that he has placed the Dajjalas being more significant than either thegreat World Wars or the deluge of Noah'sera when the whole world was submergedgives ample indications towards itssignificance and gravity. Given this fact, itseems highly ironic that we are so littleconcerned about it!
