the north bridge and the south bridge
Modern motherboard chipsets nearly alwaysconsist of two separate chips. These two chips onthe motherboard are called the north bridge andthe south bridge. Together, the north bridge andthe south bridge handle all of the communicationbetween the processor, RAM, video options, PCIslots, BIOS, ATA controller, USB ports, integratedmodem, integrated LAN port and integratedsound. The chipset also determines the type of RAM that can be used.
