SDL ProjectDear Mr. Matthew Hazaras,As requested in the Engineering Economics and Problem Solving class, please find attached the final version of the formaldehyde plant report. The reportstudies the production of formaldehyde from methanol using a silver catalyst, andincludes an overview of typical plant setup and operation, as well as sections onsafety and troubleshooting. The economic aspects of running such a plant arealso considered. The production of formaldehyde is a straightforward process. Methanoland air are combusted within a reactor in the presence of a silver catalyst. Theproduct is a mixture of formaldehyde and methanol in water, which is then runthrough an absorber to remove inert gases and a distillation column to recycleresidual methanol. The final product contains approximately thirty-seven weightpercent formaldehyde in water with four weight percent methanol added as astabilizer. The formalin solution may then be stored or used immediately inanother application.Due to the health risks posed by working with formaldehyde andmethanol, our proposed improvements to the process are the addition of arupture disk to the methanol vaporizer and implementation of hermetically sealedcanned pumps along points in the process handling formaldehyde. This willreduce the likelihood of leaks along the process, and therefore reduce exposureto these hazardous chemicals and lower their emissions from the plant.Sincerely,G. LeotaJ. MaH. ParkS.
