GVI Volunteer Diary Extract
Name:Mandy CotaAge: 25Gender: FCountry of Residence: USAStart Date: Volunteer Program: Punta Gruesa, Mexico April 2011 GVI is a well oiled machine. This is what I have come to find out about theorganization after completing an office internship and the first five weeks of theMexican Marine Expedition. The most notable similarity between the Bostonoffice and the base at Punta Gruesa is that staff members are always trying tofind out how to make something that is already great even better. I amconvinced that the constant improvements are what keeps GVI going and arewhat brings more volunteer interest each passing year.I found GVI about five years back while surfing the Internet for volunteer tourismopportunities around the world. I became enraptured with the idea of studyingthe coral reef environment and improving upon my diving. Of course, the sandybeaches and tropical environment were a welcome draw as well. Now that I amhere and the program is halfway over, I can fondly say that the wait wasabsolutely worth it.I have enjoyed everything from learning and seeing all the coral species of thearea and the diseases that can infect them to learning how to make porridge nottaste like porridge by adding copious amounts of peanut butter. Naturally, thereare many other wonderful aspects during life on the expedition… reading ingently swaying hammocks, diving with Loggerhead Turtles, playing beachvolleyball, experimenting in the kitchen (not always successfully), thefriendliness of the locals in Mahahual, meeting new people, and much more.Needless to say I am looking forward to the next five weeks and all that is instore.
