A Groovy Evening
Life at Pez Maya has an odd tendency of filling itself with very rich andotherworldly experiences that one would be lucky to encounter in a year. Ourwork here is primarily for the purpose of preserving the biodiversity of a regionwith forests, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs, all within a few miles of eachother, an area extremely valuable in natural capital. More specifically, we areworking to achieve a stable balance between the built and the natural world.Given that we at least share a significant awe and admiration for the wilderness,it is natural that we also find ourselves enjoying other, tangentially relatedexperiences: The mellow strumming of a guitar, the fresh taste of a good mealafter our hard work, a riveting conversation, a cold beer, some good bodysurfing. People here seem very alive, every hour full with activity and learning,often proactive and always positive. It is a good place to be. The days here aresimple but busy, natural, and held together by the ideal we believe in to restorethe natural world.One particular memory that I will cherish for a while involved a small group of usone evening, sitting on the communal step, enjoying the evening listening to theguitar. Not an adrenaline pumping or scary experience, it was just quite pleasant.It was the weekend in which the Amigos de Sian Ka’an families were camping onbase, and we had only briefly chatted before the evening. We were simplysitting, enjoying ourselves, playing the guitar and singing, and our little groupbegan to grow. Soon, a couple of the Sian Ka’an fellows joined us, and theevening continued, high spirits all around. The guitar was passed around, andone of the Sian Ka’an fellows began playing a song that I remembered from mydays in northern Mexico. We sang and played and just had a super time allaround.
