Foreword
Birds are telling us an importantstory about climate change
The rst State of the Birds report in 2009 revealed troublingdeclines of bird populations in the United States during the last40 years—a warning signal of the failing health of our ecosystems. It also highlighted heartening evidence that concertedconservation eorts can make a positive dierence in restoringhabitats and reversing declines. In this 2010 State of the Birds report, we consider one of thegreatest environmental challenges of our time, climate change. How will climate change aect birds and their habitats?Accelerated by human activities, climate change is altering thenatural world as we know it and is diminishing the quality ofour environment. Habitat loss and degradation not only threaten birds and other wildlife, but also threaten human and societalwell-being.Because birds are good indicators of environmental conditions, their predicted changes illustrate how ecosystems are likelyto change and they are telling us an important story. Some bird species will adapt and succeed, others will struggle anddecline, and some will disappear. Instead of describing whathas happened to bird populations, this report presents the rstsystematic analysis of what may happen to bird populations ineach major biome of the United States as a consequence of climatechange. This new assessment will aid in prioritizing and planning forconservation management. As the world works to stabilizeclimate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions andmanaging lands, immediate actions are needed to give birds aghting chance to survive. This report contains information about birds and their habitats, gives examples of what could happen due to climate change, andoutlines suggested solutions and eorts needed to help addressthese issues. By following the conservation actions in this State ofthe Birds Climate Change report, together we can help ensure thatfuture generations will enjoy the birds we are working to protecttoday.North American Bird Conservation Initiative, U.S. CommieeAmerican Bird ConservancyAssociation of Fish and Wildlife AgenciesCornell Lab of OrnithologyKlamath Bird ObservatoryNational Audubon SocietyNational Fish and Wildlife FoundationThe Nature ConservancyU.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceU.S.D.A.
