Nadia CliftonProfessor ArnoldLBST 2102-H9329 March 2011Silent Images MicrothemeA speaker from Silent Images spoke to us today about what the organization does. SilentImages is a non-profit organization that sends photographers out to give a voice to people whodon¶t have one. They document, and report things throughout the world that our news does nottell us. They tell the real stories of women in Africa, homeless children. Our news¶ front page stories are about celebrities, movies, and top grossing videogames. Our culture is numb to what is going on in the world around us, and we ignore the fact that our news does not give us world news. They may report on some things, but not enough, and wedon¶t get the whole story. The pictures that are shown seem hopeless. We, as people, look atthem and think that it is too late to help. The reality is that these people are making the most of their lives. They are happy, beautiful, and wise. They are in bad conditions, but when you seehow they really feel, your perception changes. One of the things Silent Images tries to tell people is that living in poverty is really theabsence of hope and power, not the lack of money and things of monetary value. We can buildall the schools and hospital we want, but if tribes keep fighting, the schools and hospitals won¶tmatter. The proceeds from the book ³Voices of Beauty,´ one of the picture essays theorganization has written, goes towards micro-loans. These loans are given to women in need of help. It is a ³hand up, not a hand out.´ The loans empower the women to start their own
