INTRODUCTION:

Laptops are continuously changing. From the compelling components, various applications and
thinner designs; to the memory storage, Wi-Fi capabilities and television viewing; the come a
long way from the first bulky home computers, and evolved into a fashionable
trend.Advancements in technology have led to more precise touch screens, longer range of
wireless connections, & more compact devices capable of streaming video & audio while
providing driving directions to any location within simultaneously.

German designer EvgenyOrkin thinks he has found the answer with his Roll top concept. The
main goal was to combine the laptop monitor and graphic tablet into one gadget and avoid
additional accessories, he explains. He continued to say that consumers have the option to buy
a computer and a graphic tablet with a touch screen separately, but they are not able to use
them as one laptop.

Roll top is a portable computer development concept for designer, architect and everyone, who
would like to have a gadget, which, from an aesthetic standpoint alone, certainly hits the mark.
By virtue of the OLED-Display technology and a multi touch screen the utility of a laptop
computer with its weight of a mini-notebook and screen size of 13 inch easily transforms into
the graphics tablet, which with its 17-inch flat screen can be also used as a primary monitor due
to the support attached to the back of the screen.Roll top 2.0 is a further development of Roll
top with some visible and mostly invisible improvements (e.g. internal design, placement of
certain components etc.)

History:
German designer Evgeny Orkin thinks he has found the answer with his Roll top concept. The
main goal was to combine the laptop monitor and graphic tablet into one gadget and avoid
additional accessories, he explains. He continued to say that consumers have the option to buy
a computer and a graphic tablet with a touch screen separately, but they are not able to use
them as one laptop.

ORKIN says:
The main problem is that the laptop has two levels the level you can write on and the
level you look at. With two separate planes, the entire screen cannot be utilized because the
fold will hinder you, Orkin says.
Another problem with modern day laptops is the many accessories and gadgets that
accompany them. Even with the smaller designs, big bags are required to carry everything
around, which can cause inconvenience and discomfort

Roll-Top Components:
3

Most of the components for the Roll-top already exist within the modern day designs such as
the main board, processor, memory (flash), working memory, etc.

“The Roll-top does not have a CD/DVD reader or Floppy disc because [they’re obsolete]. Other
components, such as the loudspeaker, Internet, web cam, USB ports and power supply are
based in the cylinder in which the screen would roll around” says Orkin. Such a design would be
perfect for students walking around campus grounds, business professional that travel regularly
and home consumers who just like to keep themselves entertained when waiting to meet
friends or relaxing in a coffee shop or at home.

The device is composed of two parts. The flexible OLED display and a tower, on which the
display is wrapped around. The tower contains the power adapter, speaker, webcam and the
USB interface.

Bringing Roll-top To Market:

The Roll-top’s success hinges on the utilization of OLED Technology, or organic light emitting
diode. This technology would be the main component of the laptop’s monitor. It is tough,
flexible and energy saving. All these qualities are very important to me, explains Orkin.
“Flexible to roll it, tough to draw on it, and energy saving to have a smaller battery than what is
already being implemented” For Orkin to develop and produce his Roll-top design, he needs the
capacity of a big company such as Panasonic, Samsung and Dell. He has had a lot of inquiries
and believes it can be a huge success once it starts rolling.

ORKIN NEW DESIGN ROLLTOP:

The future computer should come in the form of the proposed Orkin Design’s roll-top a
conceptual computer that would have a screen roll able into bigger size, or just like traditional
newspaper which you could roll it up when not in use. The concept of the Roll-top may seem a
bit futuristic to some, but as Orkin explains, the technology is available and being produced, so
a concept like this is neither impossible nor improbable.
The roll-top would come with a flexible OLED touch screen display. Once it’s fully rolled out, it’d
serve as a 13-inch laptop/tablet, or a 17-inch dedicated computer display. The device would
also come with a detachable hub with power adapter, a stylus and a couple of USB ports. This
conceptual device shouldn’t be too far from realistic, as OLED technology is getting matured,
making one of these flexible screens would not be too difficult in the near future. At this year’s
CEATEC JAPAN 2009, the name derived from Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies,
held in Japan October 6, 2009 Denmark-based Orkin Design and Japan’s Sony literally rolled-out
its multi-touch laptop.  These laptops keep getting thinner and lighter, but as Jeremy Hsu
commented on his posting to popsci.com some concept laptops take portable to a new level.

Orkin Design's Roll-top consists of an OLED display that can start as a rolled-up mat and deploy
as a multi-touch 17-inch laptop. My beastly HP laptop just shed a tear of envy’ The Orkin laptop
can also transform into a tablet PC operable with a stylus, or become a standup flat screen
display. A power adapter and other features fit with the carrying canister that comes with a
convenient holding strap. While there really isn’t anything unique from a technology
perspective (it does however feature fabulous packaging), I was reminded and would think that
it is only made possible and constructed with the broad range of rare metals: rare earth
magnets in the voice coils, indium-tin-oxide in the OLED screens, tantalum in the capacitors,
lithium in the batteries, beryllium in the connectors and wires (especially in this model) etc.
5

STRUCTURE OF ROLLTOP:
The evolution of most gadgets is inspired by the words: convenient and handy. The computer
started out being as big as room with large pneumatic reels or punch-cards for data. Then came
the bulky personal computers which were boot-able with floppy disk software. What came next
was the OS that made booting obsolete and from the 5.1 floppy came the 3.5 versions which
still came with bulky CPU’s and screens. Both the CPU’s and screens got sleeker and more
functional with the dawn of the internet where data can be stored in the bigger memory and
higher hard drive. Then came the lap tops which went through changes in width, size, memory,
capacity and features. For the past 2 years we have the new generation notebook which is the
size of a medium-sized notebook, makes it the most portable one in the market.

Just today though, while looking for another web find and trend to write about, I see the OLED
technology being used as a specification for the Roll Top foldable laptop. Oh, sure the “laptop”
is bigger than a notebook. But when we talk ‘portable’, the Roll Top (in prototype) will be the
only roll able and luggable laptop.
Imagine a laptop so portable, you could roll it up like a yoga mat and carry it tucked under your
arm with an attached strap. Now you don’t have to imagine; this is the concept behind the Roll-
top laptop from Orkin Design.

The Roll-top laptop incorporates energy-efficient flexible OLED technology and a multi-touch
screen .As you unroll it, you get a laptop with a 13-inch screen. Flattened out, it becomes a
graphics tablet for use with the enclosed stylus pen. On the back the Roll-top laptop is a stand
that can be pulled out into a 17-inch display for viewing videos. A webcam, loudspeaker and
power/data supply are included in the core cylinder

Imagine if you could roll up your laptop like a newspaper and open it when required, and what
if you could turn your laptop into a primary monitor if you wanted to play some awesome video
games. We’ll all these are possible with the cool new conceptual ROLL TOP Laptop concept,
which is being touted as a Future Designer Laptop. Orkin Design has unveiled this cool new
concept with the support of Schlagheck-Design and the device comes with a flexible display
which can be rolled and carried wherever you want. This goes beyond the traditional book like
laptops which are cumbersome to say the least.
Thanks to its OLED-Display technology and a multi touch screen, it can be used a laptop while it
weighs as much as mini notebook. It comes with a 13 inch screen while being used a laptop and
when being used as a monitor, you could get a cool 17 inches screen. Power supply, multimedia
integrated pen and even a holding belt are integrated in the ROLL-TOP and it certainly is an all-
in-one gadget.

 STYLE AND DESIGN:

With a focus on style, lightness and mobility, the prototype abuses of new technologies in the
field of flexible displays. According to the company developing the project, Roll-top will have a
multi touch screen OLED flexible 17-inch, if the User uses it as a tablet, or 13 inches if you use a
notebook as "common”.

In this picture you can see that the screen is stuck in a bar and it is responsible for storing all the
hardware that the application requires. Because only one screen, apparently the HD, battery,
plates and connections were transported to the bar, so the screen can stay thin and light.
Unlike the prototype from Fujitsu, the computer of tissue, which would allow the User only
perform basic tasks - no DVDs, hard disk, and webcam-the Roll-top includes tools that let more
complete. On the hardware the User can count on a webcam, speakers, three USB ports and
energy supplier.

The base is the plug able power source which has the loud speakers, webcam, USB ports and
power button. The 17″ screen is an OLED and is rolled off the base and hidden in its back panels
is the stylus pen, prop strip and the seal that locks the screen into place.

What I do like about this product would be the screen itself, which has an OLED (organic light
emitting diode) display that includes the keyboard. There are no pieces or even IC’s to protect
and the screen is a shiny glassy surface which is perfect for its touch screen technology. This
product is not only convenient and handy, it is also versatile. The screen itself can be converted
into a 13″ tablet for stylus aided editing and navigation.

What Roll-top can’t do….?

Most of the components for the Roll-top already exist within the modern day designs
such as the main board, processor, memory (flash), working memory, etc.

What is OLED?
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. The "organic" in  OLED refers to
organic material. Carbon is the basis of all organic matter. Examples of carbon-based
substances include sugar, wood and the majority of plastics. The "LED" stands for "Light
Emitting Diode" and describes the process of converting electric energy into light. There are
two types of OLEDs small molecule OLED and polymer OLED. Sony uses the small molecule type
because it has a longer lifespan.

What's so great about OLED?

Blazing fast response times, wide viewing angles, exceptional color reproduction, outstanding
Contrast levels, and high Brightness. The nature of its technology lends itself to extremely thin
and lightweight designs along with the ability to use it in a variety of different applications.
OLED is the holy grail of TV Display technologies!

How does OLED work?

A Layer of organic material is sandwiched between two conductors (an anode and a cathode),
which in turn are sandwiched between a glass top plate (seal) and a glass bottom plate
(substrate). When electric Current is applied to the two conductors, a bright, electro-
luminescent light is produced directly from the organic material.

How is color created?

OLED has more control over color expression because it only expresses pure colors when an
electric Current stimulates the relevant Pixels. The OLED primary color matrix is arranged in red,
green, and blue Pixels, which are mounted directly to a printed circuit board. Each individual
OLED element is housed in a special "micro-cavity" structure designed to greatly reduce
ambient light interference that also works to improve overall color Contrast.

OLED v/s LCD Display Monitor:

They are very different technologies. The technological differences between OLED and LCD TVs
being more than those between OLED and plasma TVs. First of all, OLED displays produce light
while LCD TVs block light. This fundamental difference determines many of the characteristics
and performances of the two types of displays. LCD doesn’t offer the best picture quality being
outrun by a mile by plasma TV. It does offer however more flexibility in how you can use it and
it is available in small sizes too. OLED is already offering superb picture quality – much better
than the one seen in an LCD – and at the same time it offers the flexibility of an LCD. In a way it
seems to take the advantages from both plasma and LCD while trying to eliminate their
disadvantages.

Lifespan
LCD’s as well as plasma TVs have a lifespan of around 60,000 hours. At this point OLED TVs are
way behind, offering a much shorter life of only a few thousand hours. The organic compounds
used in OLED displays are to blame for this short life. Considering that at the beginning their
lifespan was just a few seconds and that scientists are continuously working to improve it, we
can expect that in the future the OLED TV lifespan will be just as long.

Refresh Rate
LCD TVs have always suffered from a poor refresh rate. Because of this, fast moving images like
the ones in sports or action movies looked blurry on the edges, some people even pointing out
that the phenomenon generates headaches after long periods of time. OLED on the other hand
has exceptional refresh rates, such problems as the ones present in LCDs not making they seen
on OLED. That means, no matter what content you watch, the picture will be crisp and clear.

Viewing Angle
Another aspect that affects the picture quality of LCD TVs is the narrow viewing angle. If you
watch an LCD directly from its front side it will look good, but once you move and watch from
an angle you will notice the colors changing and the overall picture quality being affected. This
is not a problem with OLED which has very wide viewing angles, its picture not being altered
when watching from a side.
10

Black Levels
LCD TVs have always suffered from poor black levels in contrast to plasma TVs that always lead
in this area. OLED TVs are technologically very similar to plasma TVs. The black levels of OLED
displays are exceptional. This makes the picture really pop, enhancing the colors and the overall
picture quality. LCD TVs produce the picture by blocking or allowing light to pass from the light
source behind the LCD display. No matter what manufacturers have done, some of that light
still manages to pass through even when the pixels should be black. OLED on the other hand
works by generating light (in a way similar to plasma). That means if a pixel has to be black it
can be black, or at least close enough to black to seem absolutely black.

Picture Uniformity
OLED TVs have superb uniformity, colors, shades and gradients remaining uniform across the
whole screen no matter what you are watching or from what angle. LCD flat-panels, suffering
from narrower viewing angles and not only because of that, sometimes have less accurate
uniformity, their picture presenting slight variations across the screen. Many high-end LCD
models from top manufacturers manage to go around this problem and present very good
uniformity.

Power Consumption
One of the significant advantages of OLED vs. LCD and other types of televisions is their low
power consumption. Moderns LCD TVs can consume over 500W of electrical power. OLED on
the other hand, is a greener technology with much improved power consumption.

Burn-In
Burn-in was a problem with older plasma TVs. While latest plasma TV models are burn-in
resistant, they still get burn-in if abused. LCD TVs have absolutely no burn-in problem. The LCD
screen does not generate light and it isn’t using phosphors. Because of that there is no way that
an LCD could develop burn-in. This resistance to burn-in makes LCD displays suitable for
computer monitors as opposed to plasma TVs. OLED is in a way comparable to plasma. It
actively generates light through its light emitting organic compounds. That means, theoretically
OLED could develop burn-in. At this point, due to the fact there are very few OLED displays to
test, we have no pertinent information to confirm or infirm the possibility of burn-in on OLED.

Sizes and Flexibility

Another area where OLED displays really shine. We expect them to be at least as flexible as LCD
displays. LCD displays offer great flexibility being available in sizes from a few inches to as much
as 60 inch for consumer models, and up to 100 inches for prototypes. At this point small OLED
displays are common, scientists working on improving the technological process in order to be
able to manufacture large screens without risking poor quality. We are sure they will succeed to
come up with large OLED screens in a couple of years.
11

Future of OLED Technology:

Organic light-emitting diodes, which have only recently found their way from the lab to the
Consumer Electronics Show floor, are poised to become a multibillion-dollar market.

The OLED market is predicted to hit $10.9 billion by 2012 and grow to $15.5 billion two years
later, according to a report released Thursday from research firm Nano Markets. The market is
expected to reach $1.4 billion this year.
OLEDs can be fashioned into thin sheets of polymer that emit bright light when an electrical
current is applied. They are already used on the outer screen of many clam-shell cell phones, a
few MP3 players, an electric razor and a Kodak camera.
Kodak was one of the first to develop a specific kind of OLED technology. Now companies like
Sony are touting OLEDs as the next big thing in flat-screen televisions and General Electric is
using them to develop more energy-efficient lighting fixtures and windows. Their thinness and
promise of low power consumption also make OLEDs ideal for signs, as well as computer and
laptop monitors.
"The attraction for OLEDs in all of these areas--cell phones, signs or computer and television
displays--is that, first of all, OLEDs are very bright and attractive to look at," said Lawrence
Gasman, a senior analyst at Nano Markets.

OLED displays require no backlighting, as LCDs (liquid crystal displays) do. In fact, OLEDs, which
promise to be more energy-efficient, could be used to replace the power-eating fluorescent
backlighting currently used for LCDs, according to Gasman.
Also, OLEDs may prove cheaper to manufacture. Currently, OLED displays are not as
complicated to produce as LCD displays, though the processes are similar, said Gasman.
12

Developing technology, however, will enable OLED displays to be printed on conventional or

ink-jet printers. The new roll-to-roll process, similar in look to newspaper printing, will be much
cheaper than the LCD manufacturing process, said Gasman.
Although Sony has said that 2008 could see some OLED televisions available to consumers,
don't expect to see OLED televisions become the norm overnight. Companies have invested
heavily in LCD manufacturing plants, according to Gasman, and are unlikely to throw them out
just to switch to OLEDs.
"It takes a long time for any new technology, however good, to take over in televisions. To state
the obvious, people don't buy a new one after 18 months as they do with cell phones. The
product life for televisions is longer," said Gasman.
Do expect to see OLEDs as the main screens on mobile phones. OLEDs have fast switching rates,
which mean they are good for video. That is a big motivator for main displays on cell phones,
especially with mobile video becoming more popular.
"In theory, they also have very low power consumption overall. They don't drain the batteries
as fast as LCDs do, and that is tied to the switching issue. You don't need as much power to
change pictures and things," said Gasman.
"And power is probably the main constraint--apart from size issues--on what you can do on
mobile phone or handheld gaming devices," he said.

 Laptop versus Roll-top:

The major difference between a laptop and a roll-top is the physical structure. Unlike a laptop's
two-fold, book-like appearance, one needs to unfurl the roll-top. As a direct consequence, a
laptop when closed appears flat while a roll-top when closed, appears rounded, as its name
obviously suggests.

Like modern laptops, roll-tops have the basic elements that people would like to see in a
computer. Orkin Design assures that roll-tops retain computer features including clear control
buttons, ports and volume control while introducing latest additions to suit the "roll-top
design."

Latest additions include a "fix button," a "pen depot" and a "catch to snap in base and flat
board for easy roll up." In addition, a site called Cool Business Ideas has already considered roll-
top laptops as "flexible OLED display laptops, capable of multi touch." (Published October 2009,
accessed October 2010).

The inception of roll-top design is expected to stimulate more ideas and concepts concerning
computer advancement. Computer companies will surely begin thinking of wise bargaining
strategies to get the legitimate right to transform this design into a tangible computer
technology, with a competitive market value.
13

BENEFITS OF ORKIN’S DESIGN ROLLTOP:

1. One, the Roll-top combines the laptop, monitor and graphic tables without any problem
(such as small display in monitor modus or fold on screen in graphic tablet modus).

2. Secondly, the Roll-top is an all-in-one gadget that integrates the power supply, loud
speaker, laptop bag and mouse into one. You don’t have to carry extra accessories.

3. Lastly, due to the new available technology, the design is very compact and possesses a
completely new outlook.

With the one design model, Orkin hopes to catch the attention of major producers
and distributors. He is very confident that his concept would be very attractive to consumers
and sell big once it hits the market shelves.
The device of the flexible display allows a new concept in notebook design growing
out of the traditional “book formed” laptop into unfurling and convolving portable computer.
Roll top incorporates both latest high-tech devices and a new brand design techniques into a
computer that will increase the quality and productivity of the designers work. On top of
everything else no laptop bag needed – all computer utilities from an interactive pen through
power supply to the holding belt are integrated in Roll top. This is really an all-in-one gadget.
14

Drawbacks of Roll-Top:
The only drawback I could see would be if the Roll-Top could make it through as an all-weather
carry-on. Extreme temperatures are known to have an effect on electronic parts. The carry-on
feature would also be useless for travel to far flung places that have neither service providers
nor power. Yet the design would fit for urban use, can’t picture Roll-Top braving the elements
on a hiking trip or a trip to the Himalayas. I’d like to think that the Roll-Top would also get rid of
owners having to buy pricey water-proof cases though.
15

Conclusion:
If this product is ever manufactured, you could carry your laptop like a newspaper by rolling it
up, and making sure that you are not burdened by heavy laptop bags. While this is still a
concept, we had written about the cool Microsoft Courier Tablet which comes with dual
screens. You could also read about Cintiq, which allows you to write and draw better than with
the help of pen and paper.

Besides leading to an extreme the concept of portable computer, the Roll-top succeeded in
reuniting two of the largest consumer dreams of geeks on call: net books, objects of desire
of any User who want to stay connected and up to date with new technology and tablets, even
more famous after rumors of the launch of Apple Tablet. Thus, the folding notebook lets mobile
fans delight in a notebook with touch-sensitive keys or a tablet for photo editing or performing
more complex tasks. To use one of two devices, simply unroll the screen completely, in the case
of the tablet, or bend it 90 degrees to enter text or surf the web with a 100% Touch screen
notebook.

To close the package dreams of consumption, it also lets you view videos or photos like a
portable television. The screen has a support on the back. With this, you can leave it up and
watch a movie while waiting for an email from your boss.
