Butte County Library’s Literacy Services
provides volunteer-based tutoring for adults
wanting to improve their basic reading and
writing skills. Pairs typically meet once or
twice a week in their local library branch. By
volunteering just 2-3 hours a week, you can
make a huge difference!
Literacy Services invites you to attend tutor
training offered Saturdays May 21 and June 4
at the Oroville Branch Library. Previous expe-
rience is not necessary, but volunteers need to
attend both sessions.

 Low Cost Rabies Clinic,
May 18, 2011
On Wednesday, May 18, 2011 the Butte
County Public Health Department is co-spon-
soring a low cost rabies vaccination clinic with
the North Valley Veterinary Medical Associa-
tion. The clinic will be held at the Butte Coun-
ty Animal Control Office located at 202 Mira
Loma Drive in Oroville between the hours of
5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
Rabies vaccinations are available for $6.00
(cash only). Other vaccines will be available
at an additional cost. Dog licensing and mi-
crochipping for both county and city dogs will
also be available by Butte County Animal Con-
trol and the Northwest SPCA. It is estimated
that every year 30,000-40,000 U.S. residents
are potentially exposed to rabies, requiring hu-
man rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP).
When left untreated, rabies in humans is al-
most always fatal. However, it is also 100%
preventable.
“In general, pets have a higher risk of com-
ing into contact with wild animals that may
have rabies than we do,” states Linda Haller,
Animal Control Program Manager. “Cats and
dogs that have not gotten their rabies shots that
are exposed to rabies must be quarantined for
six months or euthanized, because of their risk
of getting rabies after the exposure. To help
reduce this risk it’s very important to keep ra-
bies vaccinations current for all cats and dogs.”
Although the majority of rabies cases occur in
wildlife, most humans are exposed to the vi-
rus as a result of an encounter with an infected
domestic animal. Keeping your pets current on
their rabies vaccination is the primary means
of helping to prevent rabies in humans and do-
mestic animals.

(StatePoint) When it comes to being
“green,” sometimes we simply need to
get back to basics.
An easy place to start is by examin-
ing your recycling efforts. Something as
simple as recycling more of the plastic
bottles, bags and wraps you use every
day can make a big difference.
But recycling doesn’t stop with throw-
ing your plastics in the bin; purchasing
products made with recycled materials
is another great way to go green.
In fact, nearly 83 percent of Ameri-
cans say they feel more “green” when
buying products made with recycled
plastics or other recycled materials, ac-
cording to a recent survey by Plastics
Make It Possible, an initiative sponsored
by the plastics industries of the Ameri-
can Chemistry Council.
“We have so many options today to
buy products that not only look good
but also help us feel good about helping
the environment.” said Steve Russell, vice
president of the plastics division of the
American Chemistry Council. “Ameri-
cans can close the ‘recycling loop’ by
purchasing products made with recycled
materials. Many plastics can be recycled
and given a second life as clothing, car-
peting, furniture, gardening equipment,
backyard decks, new bottles and bags
and other products we use every day.”
Here are some tips to get you back to
recycling basics:

proposed countless ways to improve the
environment, but something as simple
as changing the way you dispose of your
trash could have a significant impact on

By composting biodegradable materi-
als, such as yard trimmings, food waste
and disposable paper products in a pile
or bin, a nutrient-rich soil is created that
can be used for gardening. This soil re-
duces the need for chemical fertilizers
and pesticides, is better for the environ-
ment and will save you money. It also
promotes healthy foliage and growth --
a boon to gardeners everywhere.
“Few Americans realize that nearly 50
percent of the waste from their home is
compostable,” says Eric Happell, Direc-
tor of Fiber Business Unit at Huhtamaki,
the makers of Chinet paper products. “If
every American household composted,
we could reduce our solid waste stream
by more than 60 percent.”
Here’s a step-by-step guide to starting
a composting pile at home:
* Select a convenient spot for com-
posting. This spot can either be indoors
in a compost bin or outdoors in a semi-
shaded and well-drained area. Don’t put
your compost pile under acid producing
trees like pines.
* Combine organic wastes such as
yard trimmings, food scraps and biode-
gradable products into a pile, then add
bulking agents such as wood chips to
accelerate the breakdown of organic ma-
terials.
* Let nature take its course. Typical
compost will turn into rich soil in two
to five weeks.
A properly managed compost bin or
pile will not attract pests or rodents and
will not smell bad. Therefore, make sure
you know what you can and cannot add
to a compost pile.
Many everyday items can be used,
including fruits and vegetables, yard
trimmings, eggshells, coffee grounds,
teabags, and certain paper products. For
example, Chinet’s Classic White and
Casuals lines of paper plates are 100 per-
cent biodegradable and endorsed by the
U.S. Composting Council. You can also
add dryer and vacuum cleaner lint, pet
fur and fireplace ashes.
Other biodegradable materials, like
hay, straw, grass clippings, saw dust and
leaves can also be added to compost
piles, with the exception of black walnut
leaves, which release chemicals that are
harmful to plants. Also, don’t include
diseased or insect-ridden plants, or
plants treated with chemicals or pesti-
cides; these, too, will make the compost
harmful or toxic.
Be sure to avoid adding food and
organic matter that will make the com-
post pile smell, such as dairy products,
egg yolks (whites are okay), fats, grease,
lard and oils. Meat and fish scraps are
compostable, but make sure they do not
contain parasites or bacteria.

A Native American Evening Hike in Sutter
Buttes with California Heritage Treks & the
Yuba Historical Society
On Sunday, May 22, 2011, California Heri-
tage Treks collaborates with the Yuba Histori-
cal Society to take a slowly paced 4-mile walk
through Braggs Canyon on the western flank
of the Sutter Buttes. The guide is Grayson Co-
ney, cultural director of the Nevada County Tsi
Akim Maidu tribe, who provides the “Middle
Mountain” cultural heritage background of the
native people of the Sacramento Valley and
Sierra Nevada. If you have been looking at the
Sutter Buttes and wanting to see inside, this
is a golden opportunity to learn about the im-
portance of
Esto Yamani as it is called by the Maidu, by
joining the afternoon/evening hike with Gray-
son Coney. The trek is an adventure through
Bragg’s Canyon with breathtaking surround-
ings which provide Mr. Coney a backdrop for
stories of how the Buttes are a central land-
mark from its creation, to its natural life, to the
end of the world for the native peoples of the
region. The trek goes through this largest can-
yon in the Sutter Buttes, past late-blooming

New Additions
The Chamber has a couple of familiar
faces playing new roles. Chamber Ambassa-
dor Tambara Garrick, owner of FKO in Oro-
ville, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on
the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and Lisa
Fitzgerald, known countywide for her work in
radio and non-profits, is our new Membership
Sales Executive. They both bring great energy
and lots of experience in business, marketing,
event planning and community service.
New staff member brings a wealth of ex-
perience
The Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce
is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa
Fitzgerald to Membership Sales Executive.
Her first day on the job was April 11. Fitzger-
ald’s duties include membership, advertising
and sponsorship sales, as well as a multitude
of other duties required of anyone working for
a non-profit organization.
“Lisa brings a wealth of experience to the
Chamber, as well as enthusiasm and a positive
attitude. She is a great fit and a valuable asset,”
said Claudia Knaus, the Chamber’s President/
CEO. “She will help the Chamber grow in
numbers, making it a stronger and more effec-
tive organization, which will benefit the mem-
bership and the entire community.”
Fitzgerald is also dedicated to community
service and is involved with numerous clubs,
boards, committees, etc. She spent 15 years
in radio working as the Marketing & Alterna-
tive Revenue Director for Deer Creek Broad-
casting. Prior to radio, she spent 10 years as
a Marketing & Management Consultant with
Oceanshore Management Group.
“I believe in Oroville and have for a long
time. I’m simply thrilled to join the Chamber
Staff and start doing more for the community,”
said Fitzgerald. “I thought I knew a lot about
Oroville, but I’m finding out new things ev-
eryday.”
Fitzgerald is the 81st President of Sorop-
timist International of Chico and serves on
the California Nut Festival, Pioneer Day Pa-
rade and Concours d’Elegance committees as

Esto Yamani (Maidu) Onolai (Wintun) or
the Sutter Buttes is a mystical small mountain
range in the middle of the Sacramento Valley.
Geologically, it is an extinct volcano of 1.5
million years which thousands of years ago be-
came the origin of the indigenous Maidu and
Wintun peoples’ creation stories. The Wintun,
living to the west, and the Maidu, living to
the east, had seasonal encampments within
the Buttes. Here they gathered and prepared
acorns and hunted game. For the past 160
years the Buttes have been owned by private
sheep and cattle ranchers.
The group meeting site is Yuba City at I:30
pm on Sunday, May 22, 2011, departing to the
Buttes at 2:00 pm sharp to arrive in the Buttes
by 2:45 pm. Participants return to their cars
about 9:00 pm. Price is $45 per adult. Children
under 12 $15. Reservations are a must - only
30 participants possible.

Tambara Garrick, owner of FKO in Oro-
ville, has been appointed to fill a vacant seat
on the Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors. She was officially seated
at the May 9 Board meeting.
“I’m really looking forward to working
with Tambara in her new role with the Cham-
ber,” said Claudia Knaus, the Chamber’s Pres./
CEO. “Her business experience and dedication
to the community will serve her well. She’s
also someone you can depend on to get the job
done, and she’s always fun to work with.”
Garrick is very active in the community,
and is especially passionate about recreation
and the youth in our area. She has been a
YMCA Board member since 2010 and is the
founder of Oroville Go Skate Day, an annual
skateboarding competition. The 5th Annual
Oroville Go Skate-Day Grind for a Grand
Skateboard Competition is slated for June 25
this year. Garrick has served as a Chamber
Ambassador since 2006, and her company,
FKO, was recognized as Oroville Area Cham-
ber of Commerce Small Business of the Year
for 2010.
“I am excited and proud to be a member of
the Chamber’s Board of Directors,” said Gar-
rick. “The role will allow me to continue to
support chamber events, as I have in the past
as an ambassador, and offer new challenges
which I look forward to undertaking. I love
Oroville - the community, the kids, the recre-

Garrick graduated from California State
University, Chico in 2003 with a degree in Or-
ganizational Communications/Marketing, and
completed an Honors project in 2003 at the
