Τhe countries of the Mediterranean have joined forces with UNEP/MAP,the World Bank and other regional and international organizations, as wellas non governmental organizations (NGOs), operating within theframework of the Mediterranean Action Plan, to create a
StrategicPartnership for the Mediterranean Large Marine Ecosystem(”MedPartnership”).
The MedPartnership aims to enable a coordinated and strategic approachto catalyze the policy, legal and institutional reforms, and the necessaryinvestments to reverse the degradation trends aecting this unique largemarine ecosystem, including its coastal habitats and biodiversity. The United Nations EnvironmentProgramme/ MediterraneanAction Plan (UNEP/MAP) is theregional organization thatsupports and coordinates theimplementation of the BarcelonaConvention and Protocolsadopted by all Mediterraneanriparian countries to protect themarine and coastal environment. The MedPartnership is nanciallysupported by the GlobalEnvironment Facility (GEF), the EU,the participating countries andother donors. The project is beingimplemented in close associationwith other relevant initiatives,such as Horizon 2020 for thede-pollution of the Mediterranean, the Integrated European MaritimePolicy, and the World Bank/GEF Sustainable Mediterranean Program. It alsocontributes to the sustainable development objectives of the Union for theMediterranean.
