From 1st July, new regulations from the IMO will require new vessels of over 150 gt to carry abridge navigational watch alarm system (BWAS).The overall aim is to reduce the risks of accidentsdue to an incapacitated officer on watch (OOW).Several type approved BWAS systems areavailable, including those from Martek Marineand Uni-Safe. Their purpose is to monitor bridgeactivity and detect operator disability.
