This Volume was prepared during the UNDPProject GL0/78/004 to test and demonstrate suit-able small-scale solar-powered pumping systems.It reviews the use of solar pumps for the irrigationof crops on small land-holdings in developing coun-tries and examines the technical and economiccriteria which have to be satisfied if this pumpingtechnology is to be adopted.This Volume supersedes the State of Art Reportcompleted in December 1979 and submitted tothe World Bank on 21 January 1980 (Ref. 1).A companion Volume “Small-Scale Solar-PoweredIrrigation Pumping Systems Phase I ProjectReport” summarises the work undertaken fromJuly 1979 to May 1981 on field trials, laboratorytests and system design studies which were car-ried out as part of the UNDP Project. For thecome:ce of readers the Executive Summaryof the .roject Report is included in the Reviewas Appendix 3.Both Volumes are available from the World Bank.
