The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Perhaps you recite behindyour Imam? We (the Companions) said, Yes, it is so, O Messenger of Allah. He(peace be upon him) said, Do not do that except with Fatiha-tul-Kitab (i.e. Al-Fatihah); for there is no Salah (prayer) for the one who does not recite it.However, if the Mamum is ignorant of the ruling, forgets to recite it (Part No.5; Page No. 326) or can not recite it because he came while the Imam was offeringRuku (bowing), reciting Al-Fatihah is overlooked for him because of the Hadithof Abu Bakarah Al-Thaqafy which is recorded in Sahih (compilation of authenticHadith) Al-Bukhari.May Allah grant us success! Is this consideredprecedence to the Imam? Is Salah considered valid in this case?A: There is nothing wrong in reciting Al-Fatihah by the Mamum before the Imam. This is not considered precedence to the Imam, as the Mamum has to read it aswell. However, if the Imam pauses for a while after reciting Al-Fatihah, it isbetter for the Mamum to recite it during this period of silence, because theProphet (peace be upon him) instructed, saying, When he (the Imam) recites (theQuran), listen attentively. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said,Perhaps you recite behind your Imam? We (the Companions) said, Yes, it is so,O Messenger of Allah. He (peace be upon him) said, Do not do that except withFatiha-tul-Kitab (the Opening of the Book, i.e. Al-Fatihah); for there is noSalah (prayer) for the one who does not recite it.May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Reciting only in one's heart without using the organs of speechis insufficient.May Allah grant us success!  Back NextPronouncing Takbir loudly by the Ma'mumhttp://alifta.net/Fatawa/FatawaChapters.aspx?View=Page&PageID=2091&PageNo=1&BookID=7 Fatwa no. 10892Q: When the Imam (the one who leads congregational Prayer) pronounces Takbirat-ul-Ihram (saying: "Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]" upon begining Prayer),the Ma'mums (those led by an Imam in Prayer) pronounce "Allahu Akbar" audibly. Asfor the rest of the (Part No. 6; Page No. 340) Takbirs in Salah (Prayer), they donot do so. Is pronouncing Takbirat-ul-Ihram audibly behind the Imam permissibleor not?A: It is desirable for the Imam to raise his voice each time he pronouncesTakbir, so that those behind him will hear. As for the Ma'mums, it is desirablefor them not to raise their voices during any of the Takbirs; they should utterit only to themselves. The raising of the voice by the Ma'mums is even considereda Bid'ah (rejected innovation in religion), and the Prophet (peace be upon him)stated, Whoever introduces something into this affair of ours that is not of it,it is to be rejected.May Allah grant us success!
