In the coming few days, Peru faces a crucial conjuncture. As citizens, we will choose a
new government from among two options. One of these options is Ms Keiko Fujimori,
whose entourage also governed the country in the 1990s under the leadership of her
father, Alberto Fujimori. Mr Fujimori is in prison serving a sentence for corruption and
human rights abuses.
Faced with this situation, the undersigned historians wish to make public our strong
rejection of the political project that Ms Fujimori and her organization represent.
Fujimorismo was responsible for the destruction of democratic institutions and for the
establishment of the largest corruption network in our history. The consequences of
these developments are still felt in the country.
For this reason, as students of our past and as promoters of the relevance of the
historical memory of our country, we urge Peruvians to not forget the antidemocratic
and corrupt legacy of fujimorismo. To confront our history can be uncomfortable, but
we must do so in order to understand the mistakes of the past that we cannot afford to
repeat if we are to build a dignified present and a future based on hope.
This document bears witness to our commitment to defend the rule of law, democratic
principles, and human rights, whatever the outcome of the election. We also undertake
to remain vigilant in order to guarantee the independence of historical research, which
is the only way to avoid the manipulation of historical discourse for political ends.
