Bouncy Egg Experiment

Aim: The aim of this experiment is to observe the reaction when a hardboiled egg and a raw
egg are submerged in vinegar over a sustained period of time.

Equipment:

1. A raw egg
2. A hardboiled egg
3. 2 clear cups
4. Vinegar
5. Cling wrap

Method:

1. Place raw and hardboiled eggs in two the two separate cups.
2. Pour vinegar in both cups so that the eggs are fully submerged.
3. Cover both cups with Cling wrap.
4. Make sure to label witch is the hardboiled egg and witch is the raw one.

Word Equation: Acid + Carbonate = salt + water + carbon dioxide

Acetic acid + Calcium Carbonate = Calcium Acetate + water + Carbon Dioxide

Balanced equation: CaCO3 + 2CH3COOH = Ca (CH3COO)2 + CO2 + H2O

floated.

Conclusion: In conclusion the experiment did not go according to my hypothesis. The egg
shell remained intact when I thought it would completely dissolve. This may be caused by me
covering glass. Also estimated time was wrong with me thinking it would take 2 days yet it took 4.
Overall however this experiment allowed us to observe the reaction and see the differences between
the raw and hardboiled eggs.

Risk Assessment: The experiment had very little danger, a low risk experiment. However
there are some procedures that must be handled with care, firstly the water will be very how while
boiling your egg, and secondly vinegar may irritate broken skin and eyes.

Classification: This experiment is an acidic chemical reaction between an acid and a

carbonate.
