Moreshire Activity 2

The Principal Examiner’s report for summer 2010 states “It was possible to achieve high marks for
this activity whilst printing a small number of relevant pages.” “There are no marks for explaining
how to import records. It is enough simply to show how many records have been imported.”

Keep your evidence/ answer short and precise.

Evidence to be submitted in summer 2010 was as shown below. All examples of screenshots are
from Moreshire Guide B. They should be helpful whether you have read this guide or not.

(a) A screen print showing the relationships in your database.

Note that all relationships must be 1 to many (1: ∞). You do not need any text or commentary, just
the screen shot.

(b) A screen print showing each table in DESIGN view.

Note that the examiner will be looking to see that you have changed data types from text to the
appropriate data type.

Obviously, the tables you construct will be different. You should check that you have a range of Data
Types. Many students fail to spot Boolean or Yes/No fields.

(c) Evidence of any validation checks applied

You must ensure that validation checks relate to the scenario. For example, you are told that the
applicant’s age will be checked – date of birth or school year, for example. You are told that
payments must be in the range £3-£10.

You could show a presence check for the student’s firstname or lastname as these are required
fields. There are no marks for a presence check on a primary field (eg username) because the
primary key cannot be left blank.

Default value of Payment date is set to current date.

It is also a required field.

You can also show sensible input masks for phone numbers and postcodes if applicable.

If you show combo boxes, you must show Limit To List as Yes, otherwise any one could enter almost
any data.

(d) Screen prints of the tables after import, showing the record count and at least five records.
(if the number of fields is too big to fit on one page, all the fields do not have to be
displayed).

Shows that there are 6 members. You are likely to have more in the data supplied in the exam!

Do not leave off the record count.
