NETWorks reports on the very latest science and technology news, puttingdiscoveries and advances in the context o everyday lie – showcasing thescientic excellence o County Durham and the North East.
Take printable electronics or example. A natural ocal point or us with the region home tothe Printable Electronics Technology Centre (PETEC) located at the North East Technology Park(NETPark) at Sedgeeld in County Durham. A UK fagship design, development and prototyping acility, it provides help to bring new printableelectronics products to market quickly by oering acilities and expertise that are rarely availablein-house.Innovative products nurtured there don’t only impact on our liestyles, lighting and reading habits. They’re energy savers too, with the potential to bring enormous benets to our environment. And PETEC isn’t the only centre o design, prototyping and manuacturing expertise our regionhas to oer. Newcastle is home to INEX, a leading contract development, manuacturing andcommercialisation centre or specialist electronic devices, microsystems and nanotechnology. Across the ve north east universities the range o nanotechnology projects undertakenincludes sensors and electronic devices, surace coatings, data storage, polymer synthesis andbiotechnology. On the trade and investment ront, an event last month showed how we can all work together. With Durham County Cricket Club in Abu Dhabi playing the MCC in a game that marked theopening o the English cricket season, we partnered the club and UK Trade and Investment in agroup visit to the United Arab Emirates. It proved a great way o doing business in a part o the world where there are so many opportunities in sectors such as energy and the environment, deence, construction, nance, healthcare, transport, education and skills and proessional services. When we’re on trade missions promoting the north east as a place to do business our job ismade a lot easier because we’re talking up a region with world-class research and innovativecompanies. You’ll nd plenty o examples o both in the pages o this issue o NETWorks.
