Re: Statement from Sheriff Ewell Hunt

Rocky Mount, VA - On Wednesday, June 02, 2011

The recent article in the Roanoke Times which used illegally leaked information is
not accurate. The ͞CAD͟ sheet that was leaked, records time from the point at
which the information is entered, and not from when it actually occurs; and, it is a
summary of information relayed through dispatch, rather than what actually
transpired. Therefore, the times and information reported on this CAD sheet are
incomplete. And because this is an ongoing murder investigation, I am limited in
what information that I can provide at this time. And, I will not do anything that
compromises this investigation. I can assure you that both myself and members
of the Franklin County Sheriff͛s Office did everything possible, with the
information that we had at the time, to alert the appropriate authorities as to the
situation regarding Mr. Agee. Moreover, both I and other members of my office
attempted to contact Mr. Agee by every possible means, in order to prevent the
tragic events from occurring this past Monday. Personally, I contacted local
authorities by the quickest method possible (by phone) in order to alert them to
what was occurring; I was advised by my dispatch of what information they had
received from Mr. Agee͛s wife regarding her husband͛s intentions; and believing
that I could expedite the process by alerting them to the situation so that they
could respond accordingly, I called Salem Police at 11:18 a.m. to let them know
what was occurring, and asked to speak to the on-duty Supervisor, believing that
Mr. Agee was on the way to his ex-wife͛s house in Salem, according to the
information that we had received by telephone contact with Mr. Agee͛s wife and
family. At no time did I cancel a ͞be on the lookout,͟ order for Mr. Agee.
The following is an exact timeline of my actions. These facts are compiled from
both phone records and the actual dispatch records from the Franklin County
Sheriff͛s Office:

It goes without saying that what happened Monday is a terrible tragedy. All of
this has had a profound effect on all of our lives both here in Franklin County, our
Sheriff͛s Office Personnel, and the Virginia State Police personnel. We must never
forget not only the lives lost, but those affected by this senseless act of violence.
At no time did we ever have any indication that Mr. Agee was capable of such a
horrific act. But this act of one person does not, and shall not reflect badly upon
the members of the Franklin County Sheriff͛s Office, who are the best law
enforcement personnel in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and, I am eternally
grateful for their service to the citizens of Franklin County.
