almost
simultaneously
thesame
autumnin

Almanach
1928
and

last
issue

the
Zeitschrift

In
hisearliestdiscussion
of
fetishism,
inthe
Three
Essays(1905d),StandardEd.,
7,
153-5,
Freud
wrote
that
'noothervariation
of
the
sexual
instinct
that
borders
onthepathological
can
lay
so
much
claimto
our
interest
asthis
one',
and
he
in
fact
returned
many
timestoa
consideration
of
it.
In
thisfirst
accounthedidnot
go
much
further
than
maintaining
that'the
choice
of
afetishis
an
after-effect
of
somesexualimpression,receivedasa
rule
in
earlychildhood',
and
he
left
it
at
that
in
somepass
ing
comments
on
foot-fetishism
in
his
studyon
Gradiva(1907a)
a
year
or
two
later
(ibid.,
9,46-7).
Hisnextapproach
to
the
subject
seemsto
havebeen
inan
unpublished
paper
'On
the
Genesis
of
Fetishism',
read
to
theVienna
Psycho-Analytical
Society
on
February
24,1909

but
we
have
unluckily
notbeen
given
accessto
the
Society's
Minutes.

Butthough
fetishismisspeciallyconsidered

Freudthere
points
out
that
this'splitting
of
the
ego'is
not
peculiartofetishism
but
is
in
factto
be
found
inmanyother
situations
in
which
the
ego
is
faced
withthe
necessity
of
constructingadefence,
andthatit
occurs
not
only
in
disavowal
but
also
in
repression.

The
explanation

the
choice
of
thefoot
as
a
fetish
approach
to
the
woman's
genitalsfrom
below-,
which
wasarrived
at

its

of
1915.
Another
similarcasehistorywas
reported
verybriefly

his

Butthough
thepresent
paper
is
of
importance
as
bringing
together
and
enlarging
onFreud's
earlierviews
on
fetishism,its
major
interestlies
in
averydifferent
direction-namely,
in
afresh
meta
psychologicaldevelopment
which
it
introduces.
For
severalyears
past
Freud
had
been
using
the
concept
of
'disavowal'('
Verleugnung')
especially
in
relationtochildren'sreactionsto
the
observation
ofthe
anatomical
distinctionbe
