Week 1 – Reckless Abandon

What is Reckless Abandon?

What is the cost of Being a Disciple?
Do we really believe the Bible?

Do we believe the Bible about the church?

Our mentality today is to make the Gospel sweet, but Jesus seems to make
it hard to follow Jesus. (He tells them to eat his flesh and drink his blood.)
1. Will we choose Comfort or the Cross (Luke 9:58) - Is this seeker
sensitive?
2. Will we choose Maintenance or Mission (Luke 9:60) - doesn't that
just seem cold?
3. Will we choose Indecisive minds or Undivided hearts? (Luke 9:61)

Luke 9:
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow
you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of
Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and
proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and
say goodbye to my family.”
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for service in the kingdom of God.”

Do we believe the Bible about the Lost?

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
New International Version (NIV)
5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will
be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are
suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble
you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will
happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his
powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not
obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting
destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory
of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and
to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you,
because you believed our testimony to you.

Revelation 20:15
New International Version (NIV)
15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was
thrown into the lake of fire.

Cost of Being a Disciple

Luke 14
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he
said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife
and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person
cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and
follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down
and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete
it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone
Week 1 – Reckless Abandon
who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and
wasn’t able to finish.’
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t
he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to
oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not
able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will
ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give
up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty
again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown
out.
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
Mat 16:24-25 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my
disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow
me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life[a]will lose it, but whoever loses
their life for me will find it.

Galatians 2:20
New International Version (NIV)
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in
me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave himself for me.

Matthew 10:37-39
New International Version (NIV)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy
of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy
of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy
of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life
for my sake will find it.

Do we Believe the Bible about the Poor?

• Proverbs 14:31 – “Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker.”
• Proverbs 21:13 – “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he
too will cry out and not be answered.”
• Proverbs 28:27 – “He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he
who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.”
• Luke 6:20-25 – “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of
God. Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied….Woe
to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you
that are full now, for you shall hunger.”
• James 5:1 – “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries
that are coming upon you.”
• Matthew 19:21-23 – “Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go,
sell your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this, he
went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his
disciples, ‘I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the
kingdom of heaven.’”
• Matthew 25:41 – To those who do not feed the hungry and clothe
the naked, Jesus says, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal
fire
prepared for the devil and his angels.”
