Planning

TASK: Once you have the title, you need

to brainstorm as many different ways as
possible of interpreting it…
Film Title:

An Elephant in the Room

OR

Back to the Machine

Using Symbolism
• Symbolism is using an object to represent
something else.
• Sometimes, this is obvious – showing a
lock to represent feeling trapped.
• Sometimes, it can be very obscure.
• What is key in your projects is that the
symbolism has significance for you.
• REMEMBER…
SYMBOLISM RULE 1:

It’s not the author’s intentions

that matter – it’s how you (the
audience) interpret the symbols
that matters.
Some film examples…
• You, Me and Everyone We Know (2005)

• A Clockwork Orange (1971)

• Surreal Film Project

The next step…
• I want your films to make use of
symbolism.

• Start thinking about how you could

symbolise some of the ideas you have
brainstormed in moving images.
