WHO WE ARE
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christianhousing ministry that works both to eliminatepoverty housing around the world and to makeadequate housing a matter of conscience andaction. Habitat welcomes to the table partnersfrom any faith — or from no faith — who arewilling to pick up a hammer to help improve thelives of families needing decent shelter.
WHAT WE DO
Habitat for Humanity organizations build, renovate and repair houses in partnershipwith people in need of adequate housing.Homeowners are selected locally by Habitatorganizations based on their need for housing, ability to repay a no-profit loan and willingnessto partner with Habitat. Loan repaymentscontribute to help build and repair additionalhouses. Because Habitat’s loans are no-profit,they are affordable for low-income partners.

Phenomenal Facts and Figures
W
e were very excitedto learn that last yearHabitat for Humanity served 75,000 familiesworldwide. at meanswe have served more than 400,000 families— or roughly 2 million people — since ourfounding in 1976.I oen try to attach such big numbersto something more tangible. For example,a 300-page book contains about 75,000words, and 2 million people would llabout 22 venues the size of the BeijingNational Stadium, where the 2008Olympics were held. Even with such a vi-sual connection, such large numbers cantake a moment to digest. ey can be over-whelming. What truly amazes me, however,is the knowledge that behind these guresare individual families whose lives havebeen forever changed. In this issue of
Habitat World
, we allownumbers to guide us on a journey throughour story. I think you will nd this an intrigu-ing way to examine our work. As you viewthings from this perspective, I believe thatyou will agree that Habitat is making a tre-mendous impact in many communities, butthe growing issue of poverty housing world-wide demands that we nd ways to do more. One of those opportunities comesthrough housing micronance programsdesigned to reach the very poor (see page10). Habitat has recently introduced itsMicroBuild Fund as a means to help fami-lies who cannot aord to purchase an entirehouse. Using housing micronance loans, families can make simple improvementsthat provide tremendous benets. Having aroof and a cement oor, for example, so of-ten means better health for families — notto mention the relief of having a dry placeto sleep at night.Once initial improvements have beenmade and paid for, families can make otherchanges to improve their housing situations.Over time, the lives of individual familiesare radically changed. Multiply those im-provements in a community, in a village andin a country, and housing micronance op-portunities can have a tremendous impacton decent housing around the world.I hope you enjoy this unique look at ouraordable housing eorts, and I pray that youwill especially be drawn to the power of one:the grace of the one God who grants us count-less blessings and the ability you — as oneindividual — possess to change the world.
