“There’s a lot of truth in that,” Terryadmitted, “a whole lot of truth. A lot of us were in between gigs and when weput The Grascals together it was like, ‘Let’s do something, let’s cut a little CDand do a little stuff on the side.’ Weweren’t really sure what we wanted todo.” However, as TheGrascals were cuttingtheir first CD, DollyParton was gearing upto go on the road. Acouple of the membershad worked with Dollyin the past and she was interested inhearing their new material. “We only had about 4 or 5 songs at thetime, but she liked what she heard andtwo or three weeks later, we were onthe road as her opening band! Thatpretty much opened the door for us,right there. So it
about timing, wecould never have planned that.” Smith confessed that
began as a completely different project.Unfortunately (or fortunately), that firstproject fell through and this EP cametogether just in time for this 50thAnniversary celebration. “Andy actuallyrequested us on the project,” Terrypointed out. “What an honor, he’s a fanof our band! He chose us to be theband to do this. We absolutely love theshow!” So, once again, timing played a keyrole in furthering The Grascals’ career.Creating great records with greatthemes also has been important to theband’s career. Smith commented, “Wedon’t go into a project thinking of aconcept,
, we just try to puttogether some traditional songs withsome original songs and as the songsare coming together, a concept kind of forms. A lot of times, the songs will begin todictate a theme or aconcept, as it were, what the album isgoing to be. Life’s likethat. As John Lennonsaid, you’re kind of over here makingplans as life happens.” My thought process skittered a bit. Likea pickup truck racing a little too fastalong a muddied back road, suddenly Iwas off-track. All I could think of wasthat a dyed-in-the-wool bluegrasstraditionalist was quoting Lennon? “I’m a big Beatles fan,” Terryproclaimed. “Our approach toperforming is more traditional thanmost bluegrass bands, especially ourrhythm. Our rhythm is more like JimmyMartin or the Osborne Brothers asopposed to the newer bluegrass groups, but we all listen to different styles of music.” I had a flash of enlightenment and Irealized that was why The Grascalsmusic had such a wide-ranging appeal:it’s pure bluegrass yet there are popelements driving some of the keymoments in the music such as thesoloing or the instrumental breaks.Without editing my thoughts, I blurtedthat revelation out to Smith.
