G&D’s revolutionary technology forSecurity Documents
iesecke & Devrient G&D), aleading supplier of banknotepaper, banknote printing, currencyautomation systems, has announceda new technology – the LaserPersonalized Patch (LPP) – whichwill significantly enhance protectionagainst the counterfeiting of all kindsof ID documents. The product is G&D’s response tothe demand for increased securityand meets the need for a simplebut reliable means of verifying theauthenticity of documents in realtime. Hans Wolfgang Kunz, whoheads the Government Solutionsbusiness unit at G&D, describes theadvantages of the new technology:“This is the first time that multiplesecurity elements for ID documentshave been combined in this form. Thenew security device not only providesmaximum protection against forgery, but also enables the authenticity of documents to be checked rapidly andsimply with the naked eye.” The LPPworks by integrating three separatesecurity features, each of whichprovides a high level of security.
The solution is based on Kinegram opticallyvariable device technology in which animage integrated in the document creates adifferent illusion of movement depending onthe angle from which it is viewed. Opticallyvariable devices (OVDs) are already beingemployed today as a security element in avariety of applications, including banknotes, passports, and other forms of ID documentsuch as vehicle registration papers.
The second feature of G&D’s newLPP technology is that it also containsa “ghost image” integrated in theOVD. This is a laser image engravedin the transparent OVD film showinga miniaturized mirror image of thedocument-holder’s photograph. Thethird personalized element of the newdevice is a laser-produced engravingin the OVD that stands slightlyproud of the surface and can thusbe detected with the fingertips. Thedocument-holder’s birth date or eyecolor, for instance, can be recordedhere. The laser process used toproduce the ghost image and engravethe other personalized details resultsin a document in which the holder’spersonal data are inseparable fromthe Kinegram™ image. This unique combination of threesecurity elements provides effectiveprotection against manipulation orforgery of the personalized card or datapage. The LPP technology is suitablefor use in all types of high-security IDdocuments, including identity cards, drivers’ licenses, healthcare cards, and passports containing a machine-readable PECSEC or polycarbonatedata page.
