In the Image of God:Church Teachingon Human Sexuality
*
by Susan Brinkmann
I
t’s no accident that during thistime of immense sexual confu-sion, God sent us the great gift of Pope John Paul II. Two-thirds of what the Church has ever said onthe subject of human sexuality inher 2000 year history has been saidby this Pope. Although he didn’tchange what the Church teaches,he expounded upon it and put itinto a more contemporary languagethat might better equip Christiansto carry the message of Jesus Christinto the modern world.This new way of teaching abouthuman sexuality has come to beknown as the “theology of the body.”
God’s Plan For Sexuality
“According to John Paul II, God cre-ated the body as a ‘sign’ of his owndivine mystery,” explains Christo-pher West, moral theologian, au-thor and speaker, who is consid-ered an expert on the theology of the body. “This is why he speaks of the body as a theology, a study of God.”
* Taken from
Catholic Standard & Times
(May-June, 2004).
Because God Himself is thesource of the complementarity of the sexes, when He created man inthe image of Himself, he createdboth a male and a female. Theywere then directed to “be fruitfuland multiply” by becoming “oneflesh.”This was the original vocation of man and woman, to unite their bod-ies and produce life, but to do so inthe “image of God” which means itmust bear the following character-istics: it must be free, total, faithfuland fruitful.This teaching was not somethinginvented by the Church but takendirectly from Scripture. From thebook of Genesis onward, “The Bibleuses spousal love more than anyother image to help us understandGod’s eternal plan for humanity,”West writes. “God wants to ‘marry’us, (Hosea 2:19) to live with us inan ‘eternal exchange of love.’”
