The authors innovative vision of the solution to the problem of eutrophication is
based on a synecological approach. We propose a two-component solution in order to
protect the aquatic ecosystem from eutrophication. First, it is essential to reduce the
input of nutrients. Second, it is equally important to reduce the input of the pollutants
which weakens the potential of the ecosystem for removing the biomass of
phytoplankton by filter-feeders. Those pollutants include surfactants, detergents, and
some other compounds. Because synecology is one of key approaches in our analysis,
this concept of counteracting eutrophication was called a synecological solution to the
problem. The detergent Fairy inhibited the filtration rate of mussels Mytilus
galloprovincialis; this complements the earlier data of the author on how detergents
affect filter-feeders.
