The Academy’s mission is to fnance high-quality scientifc research, act as a scienceand science policy expert and strengthen the position o science and research. TheAcademy’s operations cover all scientifc disciplines.The main ocus o the Academy’s development activities is on improvingopportunities or proessional careers in research, providing resources and acilitiesor high-profle research environments and making the best possible use o international opportunities in all felds o research, research unding and sciencepolicy.The Academy has a number o unding instruments or various purposes. In itsresearch unding, the Academy o Finland promotes gender equality and encouragesin particular women researchers to apply or research posts and research grants romthe Academy.The Academy’s annual research unding amounts to more than 287 million euros,which represents some 15 per cent o the government’s total R&D spending.Each year Academy-unded projects account or some 3,000 researcher-years atuniversities and research institutes.The wide range o high-level basic research unded by the Academy generatesnew knowledge and new experts.
