Gender Wage Gap

An average difference between the level of income of men and women is referred to as a gender wage gap. The term does not necessarily equate to inequality and may reflect different work preferences and priorities. In democratic countries including Australia, Anti-Discrimination and Equal Employment Opportunity laws provide workplace participation options for all individuals. The laws provide legally binding remedies for proven cases of illegal gender discrimination and Industrial Relations legislation guarantees equal pay for equal or comparable work performed. Industrial Court equal pay test cases relate to determining if workers wages in one occupation are under-valued in comparison with pay rates of other occupations with comparable duties and responsibilities. In Australia, gender is no barrier to employment opportunities. An individuals take home pay is determined by a range of factors, including personal qualifications and skills, choice of employment options, legislated minimum pay rates or negotiated salary contracts on performance-based outcomes and work-life-balance choices in relation to parenting and family care responsibilities.
