Holly SetterBay City Times311 Fifth St. Bay City, MI 48708Dear Ms. Setter,You may recall I'd copied you on my recent correspondence with Gena Gates, Executive Director of the American Red Cross East Shoreline Chapter. That exchange was triggered by your May 12, 2011 item,
, which described a local woman performing the Heimlich maneuver on a near-drowning victim. On May 13, in the interests of public safety, I wrote Ms. Gates and asked if she or another Red Cross employee planned to write to your paper and request a correction or clarification. I didn't receive a reply to that message or to a May 19 follow-up, so presumably Ms. Gates doesn't intend to respond. In case Ms. Gates or another Red Cross employee followed-up directly with the paper and I missed the letter, would you please forward me a copy?

If that didn't happen, I'd appreciate it if you would please review my correspondence with Ms. Gates (click here) and to let me know if the Bay City Times intends to publish any sort of clarification. (The information should be self-explanatory, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.)Thanks much for your consideration and I look forward to your reply.Sincerely,Peter M. Peter M. Heimlich <pmh@medfraud.info>Mr. Heimlich,I appreciate your follow through on this particular issue. In my article, I did not imply that the Red Cross advocates using the Heimlich maneuver as an effect means of saving someone who has nearly drowned nor did I dispute that. The woman featured in the article described her actions as similar to the Heimlich and that was how it was presented to me by staff at the Red Cross prior to their decision to not give her the award. My editor and I do not feel there is any need for a correction or clarification as the information in the article was accurate to what both the Red Cross and Ms. Irish know to have happened and there is no assertion that it is the proper method for responding to a drowning situation. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.-Holly---Holly Setter Booth Mid-Michiganhsetter@boothmidmichigan.com(989) 513-6907
