The word “hell” in the Bible is often assumed to be the Hades of Greek mythology. But rather than being a spiritual place where souls are tormented for eternity, the Bible describes hell as a physical place of silence and unconscious "rest" in the grave. Jesus referred to death as “sleep." The Bible teaches of a future resurrection of the dead, when those who “sleep in the dust shall awake” (Daniel 12:2). The resurrection will be followed by a judgement. The wicked will be given the penalty for sin, which is death. This “second death” will be the destruction of body and soul in the lake of fire, not eternal torture.
