he next time you visit the School of Dentistry, pleasetake a few moments to visit our new “exhibit.” It willbe, literally, a trip down memory lane. Recently, nearly200 class photos were placed in one location – on walls outside
lecture rooms on the ground oor. Included are 132 dental
class photos going back to 1876 and 63 dental hygiene classphotos beginning around the middle of the 1940s. Two moreclass photos, of the dental and dental hygiene classes of 2010,have recently been added. Many of you recall that some of the class photos were
displayed on the rst oor for a number of years. But sinceour rst class of dental students graduated 134 years ago, we
ran out of room to display all the class photos. That’s no longer the case.
Because of the eorts of Erica Hanss, our administrativeocer; Dennis Lopatin, our senior associate dean; DianeMcFarland, my administrative assistant; Shannon O’Dell, curator of the Sindecuse Museum; and Per Kjeldsen, our
photographer, you can now take a trip through time andreminisce.I did that recently with leaders of the Alpha OmegaInternational Dental Fraternity. As I discussed our School, its history, and showed them our facilities, we paused tolook at many of the class photos. Seeing the faces broughtback memories of our days in dental school and discussionsabout some of our classmates, faculty, and how the practiceof dentistry has changed. If you’re a dental or dental hygiene alumnus, the classphotos will do the same for you. As you share your experienceswith a son, daughter, or friend, you may also be planting theseeds that will encourage them to pursue education here atthe University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
