President Barack Obama The White House1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NWWashington, DC 20500
The Economy Vs. My Family: Who is going to fair better?
Dear President Obama,My name is Destiny Mathis and I am a 26 year old singlemother of 3. I am hoping that you read my letter and respond sothat my family has a sense of hope going into the next year of your presidency. I am a resident NW Indiana where theunemployment rate is hovering at around 9.5%. I am strugglingdaily with the uncertainty of today’s economy. I am a Surgical Technologist and have been practicing as one for 6 years. Igraduated at the top of my college class in 2005. I just recentlylost my job in January due to the birth of my 3
child, a baby girl,Londyn. Unfortunately, I am one of the dreaded “99-ers” in needof a Tier 5. I am scrambling to figure out what the next fewmonths will bring for my 3 children and me. I can say the futurefor us looks EXTREMELY bleak and unpromising. As I look back on when I first heard you were running foroffice, I was excited but optimistic at the same time. With mymind made up to support this change, I campaigned in myneighborhood and got Barack the Vote t-shirts made. When youwere elected, I cried. I even tried to see you when you came toHighland, Indiana but I was with my mom because she had cancerat the time. She is now in remission. With the midterm elections a thing of the recent past, I stopto think if things are going to get worse because of the
Republican control of the House. Boy are they ignorant. I do thinkpeople are coming down too hard on you and your administration. An 8 year mess cannot be fixed in only 2 years’ time. I am stillbehind you 100% and so is my family. My dad is a disabledVietnam Veteran and he tells my 7 year old son, Silas, that heshould strive to be just like you. I tell my 2 year old daughter,Milan, that she will be as strong as Mrs. Obama and to not be likeme. I’m not sure she understands what I am saying but it makesfor good conversationMy ULTIMATE goal is to go back to school for nursing. I wantto be able to support my 3 children and help out my parents whohave stood beside me through EVERYTHING. I am so afraid thatthis dreaded economy is going to have my family homeless, myparents included. The housing market has hit my parents veryhard and between paying for medicine and insurance. My momcontinues to work as an Occupational Therapist and my dadretired from the United States Postal Service in August 2009.So, Mister President, I hope that the next 2 years will bringgreat hope to my family. Not to mention the several thousandother families who are in similar or worse situations. I amprayerful that things will turn around and with the grace of GOD, Ihope we all pull through. Your response, no matter how short, would be appreciated and that hope my family would need tomake it through this storm. I know you are very busy but if youcan find the time, it would be a blessing.May God Bless you Mister President and your beautifulfamily. I also ask that GOD continues to bless your presidencyand administration. Thank you for taking the time to read myletter. I have enclosed a couple pictures of myself and kids. Myparents are camera shy. Thanks again. God Bless.Sincerely,
