150THANNIVERSARYOFTHEUNIFICATIONOFITALOnMarch17th,1861VittorioEmanueleIIwasdeclaredKingofItaly,unit-ingsevenstatesundertheSavoycrown.ItwasnotuntilSeptember20th,1870,whenthePiemontesetroopsenteredRomemarkingtheendofthetemporalpowerofthePopes,thattheJewsoRomeofficiallybecamefreeandequalcitizensofItaly.ThiswasthelastdaoftheghettoofRome,establishedin1555byPopePaulIVinordertosepa-ratetheJewsfromtheChristiansociety.Instead,cultureflourishedforthreecenturieswithinthewallsoftheghetto.Despiteoppressionandpoverty,RomanJewssucceededinadaptingtotheirconfinmentandbuildastrong senseofidentity.ThepresenceofthesynagoguechoirdatesbacktotheCinqueScole,the buildinginwhichthesynagoguesoffivedifferentcommunitiesofthemulti-ethnicghettowereforcedtocohabit.Inthedecadesfollowingtheabolitionoftheghetto,theCinqueScoleweredemolishedand,in1904,amonumen-talsynagogue-TempioMaggiore-waserectedtorepresentthenewlyeman-cipatedJewishcommunity.OntheirfirstvisittotheUS,theChoiroftheTempioMaggioreconductedby renownedtenorClaudioDiSegniandfeaturingHazanAlbertoFunaroandorganistFedericodelSordo,willexposetheNewYorkpublictotheuniqueflavorsandvariationsoftheliturgicaltraditionoftheJewsofRome.TheconcertwillopenwithGiuseppeVerdi's

,theHebrewchorusfromNabucco.Thismagnificentchoralwork,whichhasbecomeasymboloftheunificationofItaly,evokesthestoryoftheBabylonianexileafterthedestructionoftheFirstTemple.Uniqueexamplesoflate19thCenturycompositionsfromtheJewishcommunitiesinFlorence,Livorno,andRomewillfollowalongwitha1920versionofHatikbyArmandoSo-rani(basedonthe17thCenturyballade
