1. Students will read new sight words from the story, “The True Story of the ThreeLittle Pigs”2. Students will segment the syllables from the new sight words
Materials:

bingo board game with word cards2.
 
blank index cards3.
 
index card with sight words4.
 
markers
Activities:
1.
 
Mini lesson – introduction of new words
(10 min; large group)
 
 
The teacher will read the new words and have the students repeat them
 
The teacher will re-read words but will segment the syllables (i.e. sug-ar) bywriting them on the board2.
 
Segment syllables of words
(10 min; small group)
 
 
Each group has a pile of index cards with the new sight words written on themand another pile with blank index cards
 
The students will pick up a card with a word and read it aloud together
 
The students will each segment the syllables of the word on a blank index card
 
The students will compare how they segmented the word and make propercorrections3.
 
Sight words Bingo
(20 min; large group)
 
 
Each student has a bingo board with various sight words
 
The teacher will read a word
 
The students will put a marker on the sight word that was just read4.
 
Debrief 
(5 min; large group)
 
 
The teacher will ask a student to read a word, then segment the syllables of theword
Grouping:
 
During the small group activity, students were grouped according to their readinglevel. They all are all on similar levels and have the opportunity to consult oneanother and ask for help without having one or two students move ahead or fallbehind from the group.
Assessments:
 
The teacher will observe students’ participation during the mini-lesson
 
The teacher will have conferences with each group to answer any questions
 
The teacher will take note during the debrief if students segment words correctly
