GENERAL GUIDELINES

Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory. Never work alone. No student may work in the laboratory without the presence of the instructor or laboratory assistant.

Never carry out unauthorized experiments. Come to the laboratory prepared. If you are unsure about what to do, please ask the instructor. Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the laboratory procedures or by your instructor.

Safety goggles and aprons must be worn whenever you work in the lab. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times. Notify the instructor immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.

Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment. (e.g. eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, etc.)

CLOTHING
Dress properly activity. during laboratory

Long hair, dangling jewelry, and loose or baggy clothing are hazards in the laboratory.

Long hair must be tied back, and dangling jewelry must be secured. Shoes must completely cover the foot. No sandals allowed on lab days.

HANDLING CHEMICALS
All chemical in the laboratory are to be considered dangerous. Do not touch, taste or smell any chemical unless specifically instructed to do so.

The proper smelling chemical fumes is to gently waft the vapor. Check the label on chemical bottles twice removing any of the contents.

ALWAYS ADD ACID SLOWLY TO WATER Never take chemicals or other materials from the laboratory area.

Always remember, HOT glassware looks exactly the same as COLD glassware, be careful what you touch. 100C = 212F (boiling point of water).

HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT

Examine glassware before each use. Never used chipped or cracked glassware. Never use a dirty glassware. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water.

If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the instructor for help.

HEATING SUBSTANCES
Should the Bunsen burner go out, immediately turn off the gas at the gas outlet valve. If you wish to turn off the burner, do so by turning off the gas at the gas outlet valve first, then close the needle valve and barrel.

Never reach over an exposed flame. Light gas burners only as instructed by the teacher.

Do not point the open end of a test tube being heated at yourself or anyone else.

ACCIDENTS
If you spill a chemical in your eye: If you get any chemical at all in your eye, immediately begin rinsing it in the eye wash, holding you eye open.

Report any accident (spill,breakage, etc) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the instructor immediately, no matter how trivial it may appear.
