Background
Similar fatigue cracks had been identied in all four Premuda sister vessels and SPS Overlay had been used previously on board the other two vessels. The SPS Overlay repair to these two remaining tankers involved the reinforcement of a welded knuckle joint on the inner hull.

Details
SPS Overlay qualities include delivering enhanced resistance to corrosion and fatigue as well as improved strength, compared to conventional steel structures. In both of these applications, areas on either side of the bulkhead were strengthened; using SPS Overlay reduced fatigue stress by up to 30%, and improved fatigue resistance by a factor of 2.4, when compared to conventional stiffened steel. SPS Overlay is a fast and non-disruptive process because existing worn steelwork is used as part of repairs. Work on these vessels was completed in less than a week; once the cargo tanks had been gas-freed, and the steel work prepared the injection process took a matter of hours.

Once again, we were impressed with the speed and simplicity of the SPS Overlay repair. We have found it to be an ideal way of strengthening particular areas on our tankers, which avoids deep and expensive steel renewals. We have now used it to complete repairs to all of the Premuda sister vessels and have been very pleased with the result on each occasion.
