BI Workload Review June 2011

BI-SW Section Mandate BI1) Provide software for BIs instruments

x Help hardware people understand their systems
x Requirements from BI HW

x Provide data for operational applications

x Requirements from OP/ABP/(CO) etc

y This includes the following responsibilities:

x Develop Real Time Front End Software for our instruments including the remote control communication interface. x Develop Expert Graphical User Interfaces [GUI] when needed y Not included: Applications used by operational users (as a principle)

Several exceptions exist (accepted) (BCTFPS, BPMOPS, CTF BPM, SEQ Tasks)

Question is where/when to stop (good enough)

2) Take active part in the commissioning and performance assessment of instruments

Programming know-how Multi-threading / Networking Structure and optimisation Re-use of code CERN Development/Deployment know-how FESA IDE (C++), Eclipse (JAVA) CCDB (dgII etc) Timing events and telegrams Understand his/her role Sometimes driving projects - sometimes not Flexibility and availability Understand customers requirements x Reduce assumptions (see later) Look inside own code before outside x Complex systems - did anything change recently ?

Communication Oral and written

Multi-tasking while remaining focused: Work on several projects at the same time Systematic & Independent Good memory or structured approach Seen this issue before? Documented somewhere?
